 | Limpin' Trenchfoot (16) 03/09/2007 | About the only post Barrett Floyd album I can listen to as it isnt anywhere near as bombastic and pretentious as 'Dark side..' , 'Animals' and 'The wall'. Not really a prog album in the perjorative sense, which is a plus.

 | souljunkie (20) 08/02/2005 | Dark Side was clearly their best effort. While I revered David Gilmore I was never a real big fan of thier stuff. I thought of it as art rock and the only one that compared and did as well was Rush. Art rock just did not get me off as much as hard rock ie..Aerosmith and Montrose comes to mind. This was more my thing. It would not make my top ten.

 | comfortably_numb (0) 07/25/2005 | This was the Floyds greatest album. The band had not yet begun to bicker and it wasnt as expiramental as their other albums. The mix of music and lyrics were just right unlike dark side of the moon wich relied to heavily on lyrics.

 | Djahuti (54) 06/27/2005 | While Floyd is not my favorite band, and Dark Side of the Moon was a better album, this is still one of the better albums of this genre from that era.

A quality album. A little too progressive for me since Im not a prog rock guy but the old psychadellic rockers do it well.

 | irishgit (138) 04/01/2005 | Most times, when I hear this album, I'm glad I'm not there. I'm pretty unimpressed by Pink Floyd, at least since I got out of college back in the Jurassic Era.

 | Enddust (0) 09/10/2004 | I liked the guy who liked Pink, you know Pink Floyd. Considering the impact of the boys on R&R you can't have a good collection without this album. Since I've been listening to this album I've hardly listened to Dark Side though you can hear D.S. on the radio, and like the Eagles why buy it when you can hear it a thousand times a day. (Of course you get a fair helping of Machine and Shine On and WYWH. What I highly recommend is Roger Water's Live in the Flesh. A lot of his own stuff as well as Floyd stuff is on there and so it, I believe, the real spirit of Floyd. Doyle Bramhall II (Stevie Ray Vaughn) and Snowy White, one on Fender one on Les Paul are just unbelievable. Cannot recommend it and the DVD any higher. The song Amused Itself to Death is the equal to any Floyd song and should probably be in the Top 11 of all time.

 | Guava Monkey (4) 04/30/2004 | angus mcpherson. it's Roger Waters who writes the lyrics and many of the tunes, not Dave Gilmour. Im not much of a fan of Floyd but this album is so loaded with atmosphere and is an object lesson to guitarists in how less is more. the 3 note riff at the start of 'Shine on..' has more impact than Yngwie Malmsteen's entire output.

 | VirileVagabond (32) 11/26/2003 | Released in 1975, Wish You Were Here is essential to any Pink Floyd collection; however, I personally preferred Animals (1977). Though Wish was more accessible and mainstream than Animals, no one really cares about mainstream when it comes to Pink Floyd. Wish You Were Here basically contains three classic Floyd singles Welcome To The Machine, Have A Cigar, and the title track sandwiched between the two epic versions of Shine On You Crazy Diamond. As other comments have noted, the release was dedicated to and related the story of the band's founder and inspiration Syd Barrett who became so mentally unstable that he was asked to leave Pink Floyd (though who left whom is still a matter of debate). Nevertheless, this release features some of David Gilmour's best guitar work.

 | gopman79 (2) 06/22/2003 | I am glad to see that this album is finally getting the recognition it deserves. This definately is high on the list of Floyd albums, do to the incredible lyrics, and the emotion poured into the making of Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (the WHOLE song) is about as perfect as a song can get, complete with great lyrics, and great guitar riffs, all in a song devoted to schizophrenic former guitarist Syd Barrett. Parts 1-5 talks about the early days of Syd, how he was caught in the crossroads of childhood and stardom. Welcome to the Machine progresses as a Record Executive explains how an artist (supposedly Syd) got into the business, and how the Executives *told* the artist what to dream about. The Elevator noise comes about, and the beginning of Have A Cigar is upon. Have A Cigar exploits how Record Executives will act like they are interested, but really are just "riding the gravy train", or in other words, in it for the money. Wish You Were Here is a change of pace song, probably a song about how the band misses Syd. The wind blows, and that brings about Shine On You Crazy Diamond (6-9), which is mostly instrumental, and in which the lyrics talk about how he is gone away. Truly, the album may only have 4 songs (technically 5), it has much substance, and great musicianship to boot.

 | ruffdraft01 (0) 06/03/2003 | I recommend this album to those that have an emptiness no matter what it is. Like its predecessor, (Dark Side of the Moon, 1973) this album has aged with common as well as complex themes sandwiched with an 'elegant' ode to former frontman Syd Barrett. In this fine piece there is some sarcastic but poignant satire given to us by the dominant songwriting prowess of Roger Waters. If one would look at this 5-track piece and peer into its history and longevity in the collective consciousness of rock fans, one would know that it was difficult to surpass its record-shattering album before it. I'm but a person to look away from because of this rave however this is an album to cause delight wheither or not you come to grips with the main theme of absence expressed here. Just listen to it, the "academy" didn't give this a number one because of the members!!!

 | wetsack (0) 05/30/2003 | Pink Floyd, I feel, can not be compared to any other band. His music does not deal with reality, it deals in another whole realm of the imagination.

 | the transgressors (0) 04/30/2003 | Wish You Were Here is both a beutiful song and a magnificent record(great cover too). Roger Waters may have been a complete jackass, but he was a master craftsman when it came to original songwriting.-- Johnny Roulette

 | rjstrock (0) 02/06/2003 | What can I say? Pink Floyd is one of the most creative rock bands of all time. A great album. David Gilmore's guitar always amazes me. His notes are well chosen, his technique is flawless. He can do more with one note than any heavy metal guitarist does with a hundred.

 | DeathRattle (1) 11/18/2002 | A great album. One of Floyd's finest moments. Only four actual songs (one consisting of nine movements split into two halfs). The one factor that makes this album so great is the fact that it's an ode to a friend...Syd Barrett. The whole album was written with the former Floyd frontman in mind. You start by remembering the past ("Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pt.I - V), the trapping of music business ("Welcome to the Machine," "Have A Cigar"), longing for a friend ("Wish You Were Here"), and future high hopes for a friend ("Shine On You Crazy Diamond Pt. VI - IX). Very soulful and honest! Great musicianship!

 | MedgarEvers (14) 11/12/2002 | Hands down, Pink Floyd's best album and one of the most underappreciated albums I've ever heard. Amazing how the band matured in the two-three years after "Dark Side of the Moon" (I'm realizing more and more what a worthless album that is) and put together this masterpiece of special effects, solid songs and great instrumentation. Only five songs but five great ones at that. Such a beautiful, clean sound on here and song flows into song like nothing else I've ever heard. Listen to it, then listen to it again and you'll understand.
