Santa Anita Handicap (The Big Cap) 5

This is probably the most important race for older horses in North America and one that has had more than its share of drama. The Seabisquit story is well known, and I won't repeat it here, largely because I think it is one of the most overtold and overblown legends in racing.

Some great horses have won this including Affirmed, and the great hard knocking John Henry.

Here's a fine race, with the late running Mr. Purple taking a huge overland route for the win.



And here's the great Best Pal blowing down the field in 1992



And finally here is something really special. This is the eastern shipper Broad Brush running down the great Ferdinand with the legendary Bill Shoemaker in the irons, catching him at the wire in one of the great finishes of all time.
