"I'm a nerd too. I just found that out tonight. We have news for the beautiful people. There's a lot more of us then there are of you. I know there's alumni here tonight. When you went to Adams you might've been called a spazz, or a dork, or a geek. Any of you that have ever felt stepped on, left out, picked on, put down, whether you think you're a nerd or not, why don't you just come down here and join us. Okay? Come on."Revenge of the Nerds, 1984

Am I mistaken?I've never thought of "nerd" as a synonym for "geek".I think a geek can be a nerd, but nerds are not necessarily posessed of intellect.Dweeb is more like it. No?Isn't Mortimer Snerd a nerd?

what is so bad about the nerd? they do not let some other group push or indimidate them into being someone they do not want to be. they are usually smart, do not cause problems. i think i heard a quote once that said something like" do not bully the nerds you may be working for them someday"

Over the years, people have made "nerd" sound like it's a bad thing. But, to me, what "nerd" says is someone who perseveres in everything they do, and they take pride in discovering new ideas. The title "nerd" might insinuate dull, drab, or whatever the case may be. But I think nerd speaks intelligence.

Seeing that my basic tastes in things are sometimes a bit different than most of the people I know, I probably qualify as a nerd, of sorts. Below are a couple of examples of how I believe myself to be different: First off, I'm intrigued by many things that are extremely old (and sometimes creaky), especially when it comes to the artistic mediums. Some of my favorite Websites are dedicated to early sound recordings, complete with Real Audio downloads. Examples of these are tinfoil.com (which contains preserved music from the very late 19th century to about 1912) and dismuke.org (which is dedicated to early 20th century pop music, big band, swing, and such). Among some of my old albums was some Scottish folk music and some Greek dance music, and novelty music (like K-Tel's "Dumb Ditties"). I just get a big kick out of things like that.Second, I am not much for being into hottest brands when it comes to fashion. People who have read enough of my reviews know that my favorite thing to wear is overalls, which is not considered the most "in" thing, right now. But, hey, I find them comfortable, and the extra pockets are handy for many things. And.... the stereotypical nerd wears suspenders, and overalls automatically have those. And the list goes on. From here, I'll let my fellow reviewers be the judge. :-)

Revenge of the nerds,is it? I see they geeked their way to the top of this RIA list. While some of my best friends have been nerds,I never signed up,even if it DOES lead to higher paying jobs and a 401K.

I prefer people who happen to be nerds over those who aspire to be. As with most things, authenticity is key.By my definition a nerd is anyone with an almost overbearing passion for something they love to do or learn about, be it technology or otherwise. I've met as many art-nerds I have tech-nerds and I love all types equally (okay maybe I like some types a _little_ more than others :P) for their eagerness and enthusiasm. The best conversations I've had in my life have a resounding commonality in that they travel down the path of nerd-dom in all its tangential and over-analytical glory. There's something so very satisfying in absorbing information from someone who cares almost obsessively about the topic of conversation.
