I generally try to avoid answering my cell while driving, on a date, etc. However I may be at an advantage over some people because about 80-90% of my incoming calls can wait.

I really hate the growing cellphone culture that states you can answer anytime, anywhere.

I hate people talking on their cell phones while they're doing... their groceries! Goddamn it! I mean, they will block the alley without even watching where they're going, because they're asking their soul mate what brand of ketchup they should get! I mean, come on, get a life!

Don't get me wrong, cell phones are a great invention. I use one, myself. I'm a firm believer that people should have one for business and emergencies. I, however, do not view the cell phone as a plaything to be used frivolously or on a whim. Especially on the road! I believe that drivers should, if at all possible, pull over if they need to use the cell phone. Talking on the cell phone in the middle of traffic is an accident waiting to happen. Please! Stop before somebody gets hurt!

Not too long ago,I was turning into a gas station-and almost hit a chick riding a bike with one hand and taking on her cell phone with her other hand...guess I shoulda hit her.

I really don't like that. It's disrespectful! Find better and more appropriate time to make your phonecalls.

Especially when you have a friend over, you're on a date, or you're driving in the car. I have a friend who always pulls this when I'm around and I'm sick of it.

Sometimes you get a call and just have to take it.

I can understand being annoyed in certain situations, but I guarantee a large majority of anyone reading this has taken a call explicitly to get out of something.

Personfication of rudeness. I have to hear someone shouting and swearing down their phone on the train. Usually a conversation inappropriate in public. I don't want to hear about your friend's boyfriend on the train, and I don't want to hear your ringtone at the cinema!

Even worse are those people THAT TALK REALLY LOUD like the rest of us want to hear. Here's a hint, we don't. We don't care. Wow, what a concept. The world does not revolve around you.

I've done this very often but my wife does this even more than I. I acknowledge that it's rude and disrespectful but sometimes you just have to answer that phone!

Don't know if this is the right place to bring it up, but close enough. Have you ever met Cell Phone Girl. I met her once. It was at St. Pete's Beach and at one of them Outdoorsy Tree House Bars that some Holiday Inns in Florida have. I was alone and was just chillin' drinking Coors Silver Bullets, smoking Marlboro Reds, and watching the Stanley Cup Finals on TV. There, on the balcony, was Cell Phone Girl. She was 20something, pretty, wearing those low tight jeans and a top that showed ample waistage. Attached to her ear was a cell phone. She seemed a bit distressed so I have to assume she was talking to a boyfriend or something. As the Lord be my witness, I was at that bar for two hours and Cell Phone Girl talked the entire time I was there. As I walked out (down the stairs) of the Tree House bar, I could still see the silhouette of Cell Phone Girl, with arm crooked up to her ear, still jibbering and jabbering on her cell phone.

This reminds me of what a female co-worker mis-stated on Monday. She wanted us to know we could still reach her in case of emergency during a funeral service she was headed to: I'll make sure I have my vibrator on during the funeral... You think cell phones are bad, what an inappropriate a time for using another handheld device!

One of my biggest pet peeves is when I'm at a restaurant with someone and they start talking on their phone. I get mad enough when it's one of my buddies - it's almost like saying that you aren't important enough to devote a couple of hours of their time to. What's worse though is if I'm on a date and the girl starts gabbing away. That is a major turnoff.

Yeah, I hate this too. I'm standing in a checkout line and the person behind me starts talking to me hey, so what are you doing tonight and I turn around and she is talking to a damn plastic blob in her hand. Blech. It's just irritating.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. I think it portrays a great deal about how our society is also. People can never just be alone or be in silence. I can understand them in an emergency or your wife calls to tell you to pick up a gallon of milk, but do you have to have a whole conversation while picking out a jar of pickles?!

If you want to talk to someone why not spark up a conversation with the person next to you? I find including myself in the conversation of the perpetrator works great (unless they are bigger than me).

It really works my nerves when I am sitting in class and someone's cell phone rings and they answer it and start talking. Most phones have voice-mail, but these cell addicts seem to forget that.

i was at a funeral a couple of months ago and while the priest was talking, someone's cell phone rang and the person got up and went to the next room to chat for like 10 minutes. i could see him smiling and laughing. how f*ckin rude can you get? you people make me sick with your cell phones. burn em all to hell

MAN I LOVE CELL PHONES. BUT I HATE WHEN AS*HOLES TALK ON IT DURING A MOVIE, OR A GIRL USES IT WHEN IM TALKING TO HER (WOMEN ALWAYS DO THIS) OR WHEN PEOPLE TALK TO THEIR FRIENDS ON IT WHEN THEIR FRIEND IS JUST ACROSS THE WAY. I don't mind cell phones themselves, and actually they are quite useful, but it's when people use them at bad times. I have been stuck behind cars with drivers who are on cell phones countless times, and have even witnessed an accident with a cellphone involved. But, the worst that I have ever seen is once in westminister abbey (London, England), right in queen victoria's burial room, a woman was using a cellphone (and you are not allowed to bring them even into the building). What P**sed me off even more was that a security guard, after asking politely many times to turn it off, almost had to actually remove it by force before she got the picture. I donno what's wrong with these people!!!

Cell phones can be great during an emergency, but if it isn't urgent, then the phone call can wait until you get home or to your office. I don't want to hear the details of your life while I'm eating dinner, trying to watch a movie, grocery shopping, or whatever.It's rude and inconsiderate. Driving while talking on a cell phone is very dangerous.

I usually dismiss talking on a cell phone at inappropriate times, because it might be important, but I have to draw the line at talking while driving your car. I personally see no reason for someone to have to carry on a heated conversation while they are driving. I have seen people get so into their conversations that they forget that they are driving. They take their hands off of the steering wheel, yell into the phone, run red lights, change lanes etc etc etc. I see no need for it, that's why I'm glad they came up with the hand-free cell phone product for a car. Other than that, people may be waiting for an important call, that happens to come at an inappropriate time, it's not their fault.

This is very, very annoying, not to mention dangerous. You'd be surprised how many car accidents that this has caused simply because some idiot was talking on a cell phone instead of paying attention to the road. It's very difficult for many people to pay attention to two things at one time (i.e. driving and talking). I fully support laws which make talking on a cell phone in heavy traffic (unless you have a hands-free set) illegal.... it will save lives!

Considering that I almost got killed while walking on a sidewalk by some SUV driving bimbo plowing out of a driveway, this is one of the worst. She had to slam on her brakes, I jumped out of the way, and she still didn't even stop or end her conversation. DON'T TALK ON YOUR CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING! PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED BECAUSE OF THIS! I agree that the definition of "inappropriate time" in this matter is a bit vague, but I have my own list of inappropriate times & places that I've compiled (not in order of importance): 1) While driving. 2) In a theater. 3) During occasions like, oh, a WEDDING, a FUNERAL, perhaps? I have witnessed BOTH of these experiences! What the hell is so important that you have to take a call during your father's funeral?? 4) When you're already talking to someone else--I mean, if it's a mutual friend, and it's a 10-second call, then it's not a big deal ("Hey, where are you? Me & <insert name here> are at <insert place here>, want to meet us? Great, see you in 30, <end call>"), but to ignore present company for a non-emergency call is rude. I see people in groups of four or five, ALL talking on cell phones, and I start to wonder if they're just talking to one another and just wanted to look cool on their phones or something. If you're going to talk in the middle of a store or sidewalk, fine, whatever, stand to the side and get out of the way. If you need to take a call while driving SO BADLY, then pull over. But if you have to take a call during your own son's wedding (the actual ceremony), then you probably shouldn't have even been invited.

Nearly every time I have to tell some one something important their moble phone rings at a very crittical and inconveniet time and rather than listen to me they answer the phone. Then I forget what I have to say. They can call back latter, It is really frustratting and bad manners.

THE TO RATING THIS SUBJECT IS FIRST TO ESTABLISH WHAT IS AN INAPPROPRIATE TIME. ALOT OF PEOPLE ARE MENTIONING I HTE GROCERY STORE, AT THE MOVIES, IN THE CAR, ETC.... THOSE ARE NOT ALL BAD TIMES. I THINK A BAD TIME IS WHEN IT WOULD BE INAPPROPRIATE TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH A PERSON WHO IS PRESENT(THE MOVIES), BUT FINE IN PLACES LIKE THE STORE WERE YOU WOULD NATURALY TALK TO SOME ONE WHO IS WITH YOU. AS FAR AS THE CAR AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THE EAR PIECE IT'S PERFECTLY SAFE.

I think cellphones are one of the worst technological advances out there. Here are five out of many instances of rude people with cell phones that I've encountered recently: #1. I was in the student library on several occasions and was distracted by another student talking on a cell phone. #2 My friend was in a minor car accident with someone who missed a red light because they were too busy on the phone. Of course, the woman blamed the accident on my friend. #3. I've been in a movie theater several times and had it ruined by someone on a cell phone. (See my response on talking during a movie.) #4. I've been out in public with another person and had them answer a cell phone call in front of me. #5. In class, either the professor or another student has had to answer their phone, interrupting clas. What the heck is so important that people can't wait until they're in the privacy of their office or their own homes?

Talking on the cell phone at an innapropriate time is rude. A guy offered to help me w/math homework .. instead he was on the phone the whole time! Rude jerk! learn some manners

I suppose cell phones can be great in emergencies. {I do not own one} They are also annoying when used at inapprotriate times. Talking when driving is just plain dangerous.Driving is risky enough and to watch out for people yakking on the plone when driving is scarey. There was an article in the paper last year where a young woman was talking to her boyfriend, and got into an accident while she was driving, sad thing to because he actually heard her say "oh my G** I am going to be hit" those were the last words he ever heard her say. she was killed instantly. it is annoying when someone takes a call when in a movie theater. I suppose cell phones can have their place but some act if they cannot be without a phone period.How sad.

I never did endorse the use of cell phones anywhere, but let alone in a car. Well, a few months ago, a guy I knew was driving home on a major highway when his cell phone rang. He had to reach over into the other seat to get it and somehow he lost control of the vehicle and it slammed into the concrete column of an overpass. After about a month in a coma, he died from his injuries. So, anyone who carries a cell phone in your car, please pull over if you can before you answer it. No call is worth your life.

If you're driving and doing this, you should have your license suspended.

somehow, every time i go see a move i end up sitting near some obnoxious fool who hasn't the common sense to turn off their cell phone! i don't care if the movie is terrible, i did not spend my money to listen to some moron ramble on through the entire thing! another gripe that i have as a person working in cystomer service: do not use the cell phone when checking out your groceries, ordering food, or expecting service! it is not only rude to the person trying to help you, but it is also rude to the person you are talking to on the phone.

I know that alot of people that go to my school that bring cell phones. One day, my principal made a specific announcement to NOT bring cell phones to class. Did the students do what they should have and left them in their cars or thier habitats? Negative! They still brought them. I've heard them go off in class, interrupting (and angering) the teacher. But, the students act like its no big deal. Although, I've never used one (I love those groovy retro rotaries myself), they are at their most dangerous when one is driving! I read (or heard) somewhere that driving while talking on a celluar phone is equivocal to driving at the blood alchol level. Hopefully, more people will get those ones that install into the cars own stereo systems. Me, personally, I'm waiting for videophones to be the next big thing!

ANY time is an inappropriate time, especially when someone is driving! Yech -- I do not like talking on the phone at ALL, so would never, ever have one of these things for my own...

This isn't something that happens to me regularly but when it does, it's bloody annoying. Most frequently it occurs when I'm on the bus or the tram - a place where I usually enjoy the silence that comes with living in Sweden (we're not that keen on talking to perfect strangers). To hear someone ranting away with someone who's side of the conversation you can't hear is incredibly unfullfilling. It gets even more annoying if it's a loaded and loud conversation. And even if they don't answer the phone the diversity of phone signals is enough to drive me mad. What was so wrong with the plain simple old fashioned one?

It may be that I am jealous of those with cell phone since I don't have one, but I find people who use them in stores, walking down the street, or while driving to be a great nuisance. When I am shopping and trying to get down an isle with a cell phone person in front of me, they act as if they don't care about anything but their meaningless conversation. They start to walk slower and just stop randomly, blocking my access, forcing me to go around them. Same thing on the sidewalk. But, when driving it's the worst, just being inconvenienced is one thing, but placing other people's lives in jeopardy is quite another. Driving while using a cell phone has been proven to be as dangerous as being drunk behind the wheel. Where are the 'Mothers Against Cell Phone Users' when you need them? And some are under the mistaken impression that hands free cell use is safer while driving, but studies have proven otherwise. I would hate to outlaw phone use while driving, but some people just can't handle the responsibility. A good solution would be to give a driver stiffer penalties if they are caught swerving while using a cell phone, or going to slow while using one. How many times have you seen a cell phone user stopped at a green light holding up traffic because they won't go? That should be fined more. These inconsiderate morons need to go though a class or something. Let me give this important advice to users-- If you're driving down a crowded highway doing 60mph and your cell phone rings, LET it ring, forget about answering it, your life or the ones around you just may depend on it.

There is nothing more rude than having some person on a cell phone at the wrong time. Cell phones usage in public should be kept to a minimum and for absolute emergencies. That is the great part about cell phones; you can keep in touch with your family when you're out or whatever. But then, you have people who have completely private conversations in public; that is what is inappropriate. I don't think the entire world needs to know the intricate parts of one's personal lives. What's even worse is when someone is having a conversation and the person they're talking to takes a phone call and begins talking away with another person. A person shouldn't be that rude and interrupt the conversation like that. There is proper cell phone etiquette. The only problem is that people are so conceited and self-centered that they don't really care about the proper modes of behavior.

The definition of the word 'inappropriate', of course, is subjective, but cell phones in general are some of the most obnoxious devices currently on the market. From their cute ring options to their effeminate ear-pieces, from their fluorescent face-plates to their sheer abundance, cell phones are, through and through, themselves inappropriate. (For the record, I too will own a cell phone by summer's end--but that doesn't mean I'll be a proud owner.)

This continues to be an extreme pet peeve of mine. It’s bad enough to be forced to listen to private, idiotic conversations as people stroll annoyingly slowly through stores and other public places usually talking at the top of their voice. But, what really throws me into a rage is when I see these communications dependant morons behind the wheel of a vehicle and attempting to pull out on a street or through a four way stop. They are usually just drifting along as though it were everyone else’s responsibility to make sure they aren’t broad sided. How stupid and self centered can you be?! The really dumb thing is the person they’re talking to is more than likely someone they’ll be seeing in less than an hour.

I'm becoming increasingly annoyed and alarmed by people's use of cell phones at inappropriate times. On the annoying side, I've seen people answer their cell phones during college classes, movies, and plays. It's especially distracting to hear a phone ring while eating at a restaurant or browsing in a bookstore. On the alarming side, I've had three close calls in my car as a result of people talking on their cell phones and not watching the road. (In all three cases, I don't think the drivers ever realized that they nearly hit me!) I'd love to be able to assign some sort of punishment to those who annoy others with their phones, and I'm thrilled by the fact that laws are being enacted to regulate the use of cell phones in cars.
