HORRIBLE COMPANY! My wife was in a car accident not of her fault. In the state of Michigan full coverage insurance is responsible to pay for medical needs. After 40+ sugeries and a ton of fighting they still havent fixed either the car or pay for the 800,000.00 that has racked up. Currently in a lawasuit for them to pay for what they have to under state law!

I have only been with State Farm for about 6 months and they have been awseome both times I needed them. First time I was broke down 200 miles from home, when i called my agent She took care of everything and a tow truck showed up in 15 mins and had us on the road in about 3 hours. 2nd time was for a windsheild replacement. They called the shop set up the appt and the shop waived my $100.00 deductable....No problems with State Farm at all...

State Farm is the most unprofessional insurance company I have ever encountered. They are very very rude and respond in a robotic monotone way....I am almost certain the people I talked to today were not even human. They have no care or concern, and Yes, I realize it is an insurance company, but I have coverage through GEICO and have always found them to be extremely nice, efficient, and most of all, human. They do not sound as if they are reading off of a piece of paper when speaking with you. I will tell everyone I know and meet in the future what a terrible insurance company State Farm is. State Farm needs to realize that it all starts with customer service, and they fail MISERABLY.
chueli 12/22/2008
NEVER go to state farm!!!!! when you have problems, state farm is never there. everytime i have an issue and i try calling my agent, i get the answering machine and if i go there, they're on break (will be back). oh and if you need roadside assistance, forget it, not even a direct number you can call. get 21st Century if you can, they're the best good rates too.
kashmir08 10/14/2008
Online quotes are alot cheaper, especially in New York! But if you move, you cannot transfer a policy at an internet rate out of state. I was paying about 275.00 every 6 months in Oregon( no speeding tickets or accidents on record, driving for 15 years). That was a policy I bought online in Oregon, but when I moved to New York again, I could not get an internet policy. I did an online quote for New York, they gave me a rate of $325.00 every 6 months, but since they will not accept an online quote here, I pay $400.00 every 6 months. Oh, and watch it when you get your policy in the mail, they like to forget that you did not want $200.00 extra in comp and collision! And customer service, HA!
Ilovehonestcom panies 09/09/2008
Horrible, horrible insurance company. Customer service agents are friendly for about two seconds until you start asking the tough questions about your claim, like "Why is no one doing anything?", at which point they proceed to give you the run-around and lie as if it's their business plan. I would recommend anyone I like to look elsewhere for insurance.

State Farm is a JOKE! If I'm not mistaken, car insurance is to PROTECT you. My daughter had an accident...her first. And after a YR they decided to cancel my insurance. My WHOLE family has this company. But they will never get ANY business from us again. I DO NOT reccomend them. You are paying this company and they are screwing you in the end. So, RUN from the GOOD NEIGHBOR......they are the ENEMY!

State Farm has just never given me any reason to switch. The single time that I had a claim (somebody hit my car while it was parked), they paid up right away with no questions asked. Their rates are low enough and their service is good enough that I will most like be a lifer with State Farm.

A couple of months ago my friend hit someone, and the back of her car was pretty messed up. She filed a claim to let State Farm know what happened. It took them WEEKS just to finally say "OK, pick a place to have your car worked on" and so she chose a body shop of her own choosing (which is legal in California, no insurance company can tell you where to go) and she drops her car off and the car shop says "We'll have State Farm assess the damage and see if we come to the same amount" so she waits and waits and State Farm is supposed to call her and tell her how much it will cost but she never gets a call and each time she calls they say "We will send a notice as soon as we send someone out there". Well, I was with her when she gets a call from the autobody shop and they call to tell her that her car is ready for pick up. So she goes there and they give her the bill and apparently SHE HAS TO PAY over $1000 and she's flipping out. So I tell her to go to her agent and we get there and the lady says "Well we sent a letter out to let you know we wouldn't be able to cover all the amount" and my friend goes, "You never notified me AND you never got my permission. Where did I sign???" and the lady just goes "Oh well we thought it'd be OK...there's nothing we can do now. You should have picked an autobody shop we work with." But luckily my dad is a police officer and he told us how illegal that was and what a SCAM!!!!! So my dad helps my friend to KEEP harassing State Farm until they pay or else she'll sue them for more than what this was worth, and FINALLY they pay it and guess what? The dumb letter comes in FINALLY saying "We will not be able to cover the full amount at this autobody shop" LOL What a JOKE!!!!!!!! It was dated AFTER they had approved to have the work done. Well, needless to say my friend SWITCHED.

while shopping for an insurance, i realised they were the only company ready to insure with an out of state license but not the cheapest ... so we discussed and they said that since i was under 25, i could get 15% off the price if i watched a security dvd ... 2 months later, i still haven't received the dvd ... they told me that they just forgot, and that it wouldn't apply to the current policy anyway... and now, they say that because i've had a minor accident, i'm no longer eligible and that there is no documentation about that. ... how can such a big company lie to their customers like that??? good neighbor liar, yeah!
patriciatxtx 07/23/2007
From a concerned individual: I suggest not to be surprised at the fact that State Farm does not care about your particular claim. State Farm is as greedy as the greediest of companies out there. All you have to do is check for yourself how much money State Farm's CEO made within the last few years (Google "Ed Rust compensation"). The company needs to keep up with these ridiculous salaries; so, where the money will come from? For the answer, all you have to do is read some of the postings here. Talking about wasting money. . . next time you talk to your agent, ask him/her where the company plans to send them this coming year (year after year). Lavish trips overseas no expenses spared for large numbers of agents. How much do you think this will cost? Again, where do you think the money comes from? This is just food for thought. Do your own research.

slow insulting claim settlement offers.I will never use state farm again.Everyone I talked to is switching to another carrier.

Letter to State Farm authorities 7/17/2007: Although my family and I have moved within the state of Michigan over five times since 1987, we have remained loyal to the Tom Rossi Agency, State Farm Insurance in Portage, MI. For twenty years I have paid our premiums in full and on time. What I at once thought was a competent agency has let me down. Yesterday I received a Notice of NonRenewal from State Farm Insurance letting us know that as of 9/18/07 they will no longer cover my car. This is due to the fact that in the past 3 years the combined [State Farm] points I have accumulated puts me over the threshold of insurability. My violations consist of two minor accidents on or near my own property where no one was injured and three speeding tickets over the past 3 years. But that does not regard the issue at hand. What I found out today is that in the state of Michigan, if you have two accidents within a three-year period you automatically become uninsurable within mutual auto policies. THIS INFORMATION WOULD HAVE BEEN VALUABLE TO ME BEFORE PLACING MY LAST CLAIM. TOM ROSSI, OUR AGENT, GAVE NO SUCH COURTESY IN LETTING ME KNOW WHAT THE END RESULT WOULD BE OF THAT CLAIM. To my knowledge, State Farm has never raised our rates due to the aforetime mentioned traffic incidents. There was no warning or courtesy call as to this past action. You would think that as a loyal policyholder I would have received the simple courtesy of a phone call informing me that another accident claim would make me uninsurable. I believe Tom Rossi is an incompetent agent and can in NO WAY be thought of as a good neighbor. My good neighbors would never treat me that way. Come to think of it- even my not-so-good neighbors would not treat me this poorly. State Farm is a company that clearly does not value my business even though I have shown loyalty for twenty years with all our homes and vehicles.
hurrburr 06/28/2007
Bad..bad..bad..with them for ten years..no tix or wrecks and they jacked my already overpriced rate up $30 a month. No thanks. I'd never felt rewarded for being a good customer.Blah blah blah, I switched and now pay $40 less a month for excellent coverage and rewards as well. Shop around.
GenghisTheHun 03/22/2007
I had State Farm for a while. It isn't that bad of a company. I had good luck.
Jack1102 03/22/2007
If there was a -star I would give it to them. PLEASE PLEASE stay away from State Farm at all costs. Unfortunely my with them will be another "statistic" of people getting jacked out of anything - even HELP from their insurance. I am hoping that getting my voice out here will deterr someone else from signing up with them. Please do not get State Farm. Stay Away from them.

OHHHHHHHHHHH...... The never ending battle of trying to get money outta insurance companies. The only complaints I see here are frompeople hit by a State Farm driver. Do you know why there are soooo many complaints from calimants? Because..... State Farm fights for it's clients/customers. I would be pissed if I was hit by a State Farm driver, too. >>>Regardless of negativity on this blog, I would to this day, and from here on out recomend State Farm to Family Friends, Foes,,,,,anyone. It might be for the victims of State Farm accidents the claims service doesn't want to pay, but I would rather have an Insurance company I know, will fight to keep their money, and in turn, fighting for the rights of policy holders. State Farm might be one of the most costly insurances $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ but you get what youpay for, right? Go with State Farm,,,,,,their worth it!!!!!

I was rear ended by a State Farm customer on Friday night while sitting at a red light. I called and reported the accident to State Farm immediately. The claims woman took my claim, gave me a claim number and the name of the adjuster and her phone number. Things went downhill from there. When we spoke to the adjuster on Monday we learned that they were unable to reach their customer. As a courtesy to their customer, they will give them two weeks to contact the insurance company before they will even begin to determine liability. Hello!!! I really doubt that they are going to call at this point. Why do I have this feeling that they are going to try to get out of paying when we were rear ended by their customer. *sigh* I really wish IHateStateFarm.com StateFarmSucks.com were available, so I could start a new website.
2centsomine 09/13/2006
A lady insured by State Farm hit my car while it was parked. I spoke to a Pat in re to my claim, straight up rude claim representative. I guess she was recording our convo because she kept saying," I don't understand what you mean." She can't be that slow because if she is, she really need not be handling people's claims. Anyway, I ain't stupid...just be careful what you say to those State Farm people especially since State Farm is known for trying to cheat on claims, look at hurricane Katrina stories. I REALLY HATE STATE FARM, never dealt with them and never will. Will inform on how long it takes to settle and how the adjuster does but so far so bad.
FAMESDANCE 09/13/2006
STATE FARM HAS NOT PAID A SINGLE DIME FOR MY SONS ACCIDENT WHICH THEIR INSURED REAR ENDED MY SONS CAR AND TOTALED IT! NOT ONLY THAT, THEY REFUSE TO GET HIM A RENTAL AND NOW HE CANT WORK OR GO TO SCHOOL DUE TO IT! WE DIDNT SIGN THE CAR OVER TO THEM BUT GUESS WHAT.. THEY HAULED IT TO BATON ROUGE LA WITHOUT PERMISION AND I HAVE TO HIRE SOMEONE TO DRIVE 3 HOURS TO DO AN ESTIMATE FOR ME1 THEY ARE CROOKED, SCAM ARTISTS AND WHY NO GOVERNMENT AGENCY HAS SHUT THEM DOWN I HAVE NO CLUE! I HATE STATE FARM, I HOPE THEY ALL GO TO PRISON ENRON ANYONE?
Notusingagian1 07/11/2006
State Farm is horrible to deal with I was hit by a State Farm insured. I have jumped through more hoops to get this resolved. There is no "general" information on their site to call to make a claim, so i wasted half a day calling people to get answers. Then when i get answers, they aren't complete, Then a rep calls me up, tells me none of those phone calls i got counted, and hangs up on me, after refusing to tell me his name, when i asked repeatedly. I feel this company is all a scam to get more money. I'm glad I don't have them.
blozzy 03/28/2006
here's a fact: all insurance companies will experience rate increases and decreases. but, you get what you pay for. the reason you write the check every month is so if you have a claim, the company will protect you. how can the company protect you if you don't carry adequate coverage. i drove around with state minumum with allstate, progressive and permanent general and had absolutely no idea how underinsured i was until i met with my state farm agent. here's to a company who actually cares.
Gromit 01/12/2006
State Farm is overpriced. You CAN do better than them on the free-market. They need to lower their policy pricing if they are to acquire more customers.
James76255 08/30/2005
After reading some of the other reviews, I would have to agree that it all depends on the agent. Like most people, I've spent most of my adult life paying for insurance, but never actually needing it. About a month ago, I needed it. I was in a car accident, and while my injuries were minor, my car (not payed for yet) was totalled. This happened on a Friday, and by Wednesday the totalled car was payed off, with a check for the remaining money at my agents office, more than enough to cover the down payment on a new car. I thought they did a great job and handeled things quickly, all things considered.
plein 08/04/2005
State Farm might give good customer service wether your local agent doesn't run a circus. After a couple of years I switched my State Farm agent. Find a competent agent.
dbkrab 05/25/2005
I was with State Farm for approximately 15 years. In that time rates continued to climb. My opinion of State Farm is that they are overated. I continued to pay the high premiums thinking it would pay off if I was ever in an accident. But after a couple accidents, I usually just took care of the insurance with the at fault insurance company myself or else State Farm did the minimal for me. Now I just pay a cheaper insurance company and get the same service I was receiving with State Farm.
typeoneg 03/02/2005
i called for a quote from this company and they wanted to charge me $200/month for a small car. no accidents or tickets on my part. they tried to tell me i had an at fault accident on my record. I have no idea where they got that from.
banjo 12/08/2004
If there is any dispute on the phone after an accident they will try as hard as they can to get you to just admit it was your fault. I had a lady make a right hand turn from the left hand lane in front of me and I wound up taking the blame for it as far as they are concerned. And they are now trying to drop me because of it! They would call at least once a week take a statement, take another statement, record a statement, have another person call to take a statement and so forth. Also a year or two earlier they tried canceling me because I had 'racing modifications' done to my car! After seeing my agent he realised that they were not and everything was fine until this!
Dave Charles 08/12/2004
I caused and accident involving two cars of course I wanted to resolve it as quickly as possible. The claims reps for State Farm were borderline mean not understanding at all they made me feel like dirt. The other driver's insurance was very nice and understood that this had been a tramatic experience for me too and were very nice. State farm seems like a cut throat company who is only nice when then are taking your money. This company advertises that it is looking out for people but the way they treated me and made me felt speaks volumes about the company's true nature.
klytie 07/17/2004
Never had a problem making legit claims, after 20 yrs. w/them.
Jim Fowler 05/21/2004
Don't make a claim, I had two houses and seven cars insured. I made a claim and due to a previous erroneous clam that did not occur, I was cancelled.

Rates kept going up on a month to month basis. Also overbilled. Did not report my coverage to my lien holder. Terrible agent.

DottieAB 07/28/2003
Inferior insurance company in paying claims. I rate them as low as I would Mercury. They do not call within 24 hours after filing claim. I got hit by an uninsured motorist. I have legitimate information and witness. State Farm failed in reaching this uninsured motorist who hit us. Therefore, their position is that it is NOT an uninsured motorist. Aka, insiniuating that we are lieing. My position is that my husband is injured and State Farm does not want to have to pay for his damages. Under "Uninsured," they would have to. They certainly didn't mind paying for fixing the car. Also lied on their paperwork. I have obtained an attorney. Unfortunate when insurance companies play these games. Off to purchase insurance from a Superior rated company.
carenab 06/22/2003
My mother got into an accident. It was her fault. Mistakes do happen. However, this is what insurance is for. Instead of paying the other party for the damages, they dropped my mother's policy. Now my mother is being sued and might possibly get in trouble for not having insurance!
pdiv 05/21/2003
I love State Farm. As a new immigrant two years ago I needed car insurance but I didn't have a US driving record/insurance history, even though I had a clean record from my home country. I signed up with Progressive after finding that Prog was cheaper than Geico - I just assumed I was screwed and would have to pay thousands of dollars a year until I had a US record. Then... someone recommended State Farm. I called them and they quoted me a price more than half the cost of Progressive. It was very easy to sign up and they were very, very nice. Gave me a road map too :) Also, when I needed renter's insurance, they signed me up and gave me a discount for having two forms of insurance with them, which effectively made the renter's insurance free. Wonderful. I felt so stupid for ever giving rude, rude, obnoxious Progressive a single cent - let me just say I had a bad time when I called to cancel with them.
amethyst_1995 04/23/2003
I have been a customer of State Farm for over 10 years now. I have my house insured through them as well as my automobiles. I have made claims on both homeowners and automobile policies and have never had a problem getting things covered. They have been very helpful in geting repairs done on time for me. I would give them 5 stars if they were a little bit cheaper than what they are. But at least they are alot cheaper than any of the other companys that I have used in the past (AAA, Citizens and Allstate).
