My favorite Indian / Pakistani restaurant in San Francisco. The place is chaotic and divey - pots and pans are stacked everywhere, and there is a back door that opens onto an incredibly sketch tenderloin alley. One time when my friend was in there, a full swat time with guns drawn tip toed through the restaurant on their way to the back alley.

But the food is cheap and fantastic, and the BYOB aspect makes it festive. My favorite plates here are the tandoori chicken and sag paneer.

The place is a total dive. The area is sketchy but not too bad, as you've just hit the fringe of the TL. The kitchen's wide open and you've got 10-15 Pakistani dudes yelling and throwing pans around. Food is great though and the most expensive thing on the menu, Tandoori Lamb, is $9.95. Most meals are $5.95.

HELL YEAH! Can we give it 5 1/2 stars, please??? Don't be frazzled by the stacks of dirty pans all over the kitchen area or the gangsters who roam the surroundings - I'm convinced this is all just a big production to keep this excellent joint a locals' secret favorite. We love you Shalimar!
