Wishful Drinking (Carrie Fisher) 1

I dole out my book buying dollars very carefully and truly wish I hadn't wasted one cent on this book. I like Carrie Fisher and have enjoyed her past work. I won't hold it this travesty against her but this book was a complete rehash of everything we already knew about her life. She tries to make light of her trials and tribulations but I just kept thinking, isn't it time to let it go yet?
Hopefully she'll sit down and put her funny and intelligent mind to work on something other than making fun of her parents and Elizabeth Taylor.

Fisher's wit is always refreshing to read, however this new glimpse into her mind is not much more than a tease of chaotic blurbs from her past. A mere 162 pages of unorganized thoughts feel more like a diary rant than a 'Wishful Insight'. I can't say that I feel sorry for a super icon that blames her problems on an empire of creative genius. George Lucas was not your problem girl, go back to therapy!

Carrie Fisher writes a hard to put down book. I love the celebrity details and she's sooo funny. It's nice that she looks at her mental illness with humor. I wish she wasn't a George W basher but to each his own.

With the exception of a scattering of witty statements, the writing was pretty much ... embarrassing. And with a lot of outdated humor. If I were writing a bad Vanity Fair article on Ms. Fisher, I'd throw up some psycho-babble stuff and say that she was still so traumatized by her life experiences, she tried to cover it - shallowly at best - with weak jokes.

What made it even worse was the attempt to shove decades of rich history into the literary equivalent of one 1/2-hour sitcom episode. It didn't even add up to a decent "drunkalog."

I was just glad when it was over.

The second star is for those rare flashes of wit.

Not very well written. It seemed like she was trying too hard to be funny, or maybe I just don't get her humor.
