Bay to Breakers is a "race" that takes place each May in San Francisco that spans the seven miles or so from the San Francisco Bay to Ocean Beach. Some participants run seriously, some run naked, some don't run at all and roll along kegs of beer, and the trail is lined with live music, house parties, and plenty of spectators. (Add picture)

Bay to Breakers is a wacky race that defines San Francisco for many people. I have never run in it, but I used to live right where the race started and I would get to see all the weird costumes and people lining up at the start of the event.

This event definetely captures the essence of San Francisco. If you think you can run it, go for it - it's about 7 miles but mostly flat and the cool SF morning temperatures make it pretty enjoyable. Once you finish you can find some for of transportation back from Ocean Beach (which becomes impossible when the crowd begins to arrive) or you can go back and join your friends, possibly dressing up like a salmon and jogging back through the crowd to find your friends - which some people do. Of course I knew one house whose occupants hung over the balcony and dropped fish nets on the salmon, which could get aggravating. This house also sold beers for $1 each and made a small fortune.

You are not completely free until you free yourself of clothes and feel like a star participating in the bay to breakers. I think the old people and men missing key parts should not be representation of how beautiful the human body is. At the senior level stage of the human body, it is not a pleasing sight. If you want to pass along a new tradition to future generations, you need to include the participation of future generations. Old flabby cheeks and Viet Nam Veterans missing their reproductive organs will earn them the label freaks and not as representatives of a free speech movement in favor of naturism.

If I had to choose one day/event that captures the essence of San Francisco, it would be the Bay to Breakers race. Bay to Breakers is a seven mile race that spans the length of San Francisco - from the San Francisco Bay at embarcadero, to the breakers of ocean beach. Some people are world class runners, some run naked, many dress up in vaguely political costumes, some people (like my friends) just roll kegs. There are bands about every half a mile on the sides of the street. Many who live on the course, throw house parties that are open to all. The only thing I can compare it to is Carnaval in Brazil, with the dancing and music and all. I did about 5 miles of Bay to Breakers yesterday rolling a keg with about 10 of my friends. The original plan was to dress the keg up as a gas pump, and have half the group dress as sheikhs and half as Texas oilmen. Of course, per GWB's example, the sheikhs would be holding hands with the oilmen. We reconsidered at the last minute, as one of our group - an army pilot - was just back from Iraq, and we didn't want to be insensitive (though it turned out that he would have supported the idea). The beer tasted just as good in civilian clothes however.
