
Baku is the capital city of Azerbaijan. Baku is located on the southern shore of the Apsheron Peninsula, on the western side of the Caspian Sea. Baku is also Azerbaijan’s largest city with a population of 1.9 million residents. Baku is noted for its oil economy and for the many beaches and spas it has along the Caspian Sea. Baku is also home to the Martyr’s Cemetery, an area formerly known as Kirov Park, but renamed to commemorate the 137 lives lost in January 1990 when Soviet tanks entered the city.
