It's a fine VCR/DVD combo. Seems a little difficult to operate and runs slower than my last Toshiba VCR/DVD player (SD-V392). Wish it were a little simpler to set-up to record a program from the satelite/cable. I would have bought another silver Toshiba SD-V392 if I could have...

This is a really great unit. It is fairly easy to record VHS tapes to DVD - once you do the basic setup, recording is a 1-button process. One caveat - this component will NOT copy most commercial (i.e., pre-recorded) VHS tapes. It does a great job on stuff you may have recorded, but you will not be able to record this type of VHS tape.

I have an extensive collection of old tapes that I wanted to convert to DVD. This product does exactly that and does it very well. So yes, buy it. Its gets 4 stars instead of 5 because the instruction manual is terrible. Expect a bit of frustration when first using it out of the box. Consult these reviews for some helpful tips. That's how I learned to use it.

This product never worked as advertised. The instructions are essentially useless. I followed the directions to the tee in regard to copying VCR to DVD but nothing I did worked. After putting in a VHS tape that I had recorded (not copy protected and with the erase tab intact), and then an empty DVD -R disc and then following the instructions to transfer, the red circle with slash appears on screen. All cables were connected as per the convoluted directions. HDMI from the unit to TV is all that is needed for directly copying VHS to DVD according to directions but to no avail. I even tried every permutation of DVD disks...-R, -RW, +R, etc., but again to no avail. I called the Toshiba support number after futilely visiting their online customer support and FAQ but the recorded msg. only referred me back to their online support site. In my opinion, the instructions are worthless, the customer support is worthless and the unit is worthless. I don't know how any of the other reviewers were able to get this thing to work but I don't have unlimited time to spend figuring it out, even if it were possible to figure it out. I sent it back within days to Amazon and will try to find another way to copy my VHS tapes.

I wish Amazon would not use UPS, they always leave my stuff next to the street and say they put it on my porch. Secondly, this DVD/VHS recorder arrived brand new, but totally non-functional with a dvd door unable to open. Customer service was nice, but suggested I send it back to Toshiba and pay to have it serviced. So I sent it back to Amazon.
