Their later albums are definitely more tuneful and interesting than the earlier stuff, although some could accuse them of being wilfully weird for its own sake. Not everything they do hits the mark but at least they take chances and don't rip off the Beatles, Led Zep, the Kinks and other well plundered acts. Wayne Coyne's voice is an acquired taste and the John Bonham type drum sounds are sometimes too up front in the mix but in an age where there's little originality in rock and pop they're most welcome.

One of the better long running experimental rock bands out there. I like what Memorial had to say about them. Coyne has an unusually high voice that stands apart from the music in such a way that makes the song more distinctive. Flaming Lips is another band that is apparently unpredictable in concert. According to wikipedia.org the band has been known to use "animal suits, puppets, video projections and complex stage light configurations" to make their shows more entertaining. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flaming_Lips

I remember in 93 when She Dont Use Jelly was big. I figured yeah just another post grunge alt-nation flavor of the day. I ignored them for years after that. But one day I was sitting in a Las Vegas hotel room listening to a CD sampler and I heard Do You Realize. Looking out at the lights and glitz of Vegas I had an out of body experience. I rushed out and bought Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots and was fully won over. I bought the Soft Bulletin and was equally smitten. Then I saw them in concert and was moved beyond belief. Wayne Coyne is a Messiah!

Wayne Coyne has a way of expressing the inexpressable. Waxing poetic on subjects like the sudden optimism that comes out of nowhere, he songs are written in the same state of mind you get when you're daydreaming while taking a quiz in Algebra. If you're one of those people who doesn't listen to music for the lyrics (a hoser, in other words), the Flaming Lips may still be right up your alley, spinning fuzzy bass lines and acid-induced melodies that manage to create a catchiness unique to the Lips. Simply put, The Flaming Lips are in a class all their own.

possibly one of the greatest bands of all time...a band with great talent, any band who can use over 30 instruments in one album is talented...not that sh**** rap bullsh**

The Flaming Lips are a band that i should probably like more than I do. i like a couple of their tunes a lot - do you realize is a fantastic song, and vaseline is funny and creative, reminding me of pavement's cut your hair. That being said, something about FL rubs me the wrong way... maybe they're a little smug?

I love this band! Check out the album "The Soft Bullet". Awesome! Best songs: umm.. I would say "Race for the price", and the funny song, "BAd Days".
