It has been deemed the best rock song ever recorded in history. Year after year, it stays in the first place on the best all time songs. There must be a reason for that. Awesome!

hehe...I'm so cruel

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
And you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

And it makes me wonder

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen

Yes there are two paths you can go by
but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on

Your head is humming and it won't go in case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady can't you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
Woe oh oh oh oh oh

And she's buying a stairway to heaven

I kinda got tired of this one even before I was out of tenth grade- the famous opening acoustic riffs were actually taken from an instrumental called "Taurus" from the debut album of a great/ underrated band called Spirit. It's hard to talk objectively about this one now- when I was 13 I'd give it a 5 but now I'll give it a neutralized 3, but I think I have Franks beat- on the live version from "Song Remains The Same" a truly cringe inducing moment is when after "the forests will echo with laughter" Plant says "Does anyone remember laughter?" in a silly way, so silly that even Bono would be like that's cheesy and bombastic."

Now don't get your hedgerow in a bustle, but although it is a grand piece of music with an incredible guitar solo, I've always found the lyrics to be pretty silly. And the line "to be a rock and not to roll" has to be the worst phrase in the entire rock and roll songbook.

I think I must be one of the few people who is not crazy about this song. I do not hate it but it is too over rated to me. I would not personally pick this as one of my favorite songs ever category. Maybe because i was in middle school and high school when this was played all the time in the 70s and i just got sick of it. sure it is pretty and has a nice sound, I like a lot more songs better though. I would put this on the list of overplayed songs.

One of the most annoying records of all time... it's right up there with Free Bird, Margaritaville and anything by Billy Joel.

My feelings about this song are heavily colored by having heard it so many times. Local radio stations play it at least once a day, and it seems like every bar band tries to cover it.

Don't get me wrong, its a pretty good song, but damn, its not close to their best work.

Lyrics are preachy and pretentious as well.

Im not saying its a crap song, I dont personally like it but to say its one of the greatest if not the greatest rock songs ever is a huge spit in the face to all guitarists whio appreciate good rock!
The most overrated song in all history, th solos crap aswell, and that's another thing that shouldn't even be on top 100 solo lists!

I'll rate this as their best but even this one leaves a lot of room for improvement. This band are pure unaldulterated overrated noise as far a I'm concerned.

What an accomplishment. This song is so full of different styles of music from folk to jazz and ends with a powerful climax. The boys should be happy with what they created here. I love listening to this from TSRTS...Pagey's solo is the best.

This song is all over. Simply the best song ever recorded in the history of music. Whats also special about this song is that Led Zeppelin perform it just as good or if not even beter then the studio version. Also when they perform this song live they make it different every time with different guitar solos or drum solos. Incredible!

Like many things, this is a matter of opinion. In my opinion, the greatest song ever, by the greatest rock group ever. I saw Led Zeppelin in 1971, and to use an old cliche, They Rocked. No one I've ever seen before or since compares. But, that is just my opinion.

Simply the best song ever made. Jimmy Page is an absolute genius and Led Zep plays this amazing song to perfection. It is NOT overplayed and definitely not overrated. This song is just better than any other made.

Talk about simultaneously kissing Zeplin's behind and kicking it. A very mixed-up editorial, CanadaSucks. As for me, I happen to like long guitar solos and complex songs. Zeppelin still owns.

Js 100's rating is really funny. . .I sorta agree. . .Stairway is overrated, it's very 70's (3 minute guitar solos) but it is not bad music no matter how overblown it is.

I love thsi song, wouldn't call it the greatest of all time, but I do love it...I wouldn't say that it is overplayed in any respects, since I hadn't even heard it until this year, and I have been a devotee of hard rock for a long time.

This song may be overplayed, but I do not believe it is overrated. It is Jimmy's genius as usual at work in that the guitar part could stand alone with no lyrics or other instruments and still be compelling. It builds up like a story - with an intro, conflict, resolution and conclusion. The lyrics I think were able to give the song it's timelessness. Being so cryptic they keep people guessing for years and years. You don't feel you're getting a cliche subject, or getting preached at with some kind of allegory in the song; even though the lyrics are mysterious, they're so fantastical that they're just enchanting to listen to. (Much like Plant's voice itself, IMHO). A beautiful song that deserves all the credit it gets.

It is a extremely well written and well performed song, as only Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin could execute. The lyrics are amazing, providing very provacative passages to compile a great set of lyrics. Jimmy Page plays the guitar to death in this song, with some of the best riffs you will ever hear in a single song... the one problem with this song, however, is how it is overplayed on the radio. I get tired of this song after hearing it over and over. But that should take no credit away from the fact of the matter, which is that this is undoubtedly one of the greatest songs ever made.

Nothing beat the awkward, obligatory Stairway to Heaven slow dance at high school dances. Everyting starts off great, romantic, just what you're looking for in a slow dance..."there's a lady who's sure, all that glitters is gold..." - then, just as you are start getting comfortable with your partner, getting a little closer, smelling her hair... Robert Plant starts belting out "AND AS WE WIND ON DOWN THE ROAD, OUR SHADOWS TALLER THAN OUR SOULS" and the guitar is hammering, and Plant is screaming, and you're not sure whether to switch out of slow dance position, and your feet are moving faster... ahh the memories of high school. does anyone know if they still play this crazy song anymore?
