Octavio Paz (1914-1998) was a Mexican poet and diplomat. Paz’s work can be seen as influenced by a mixture of Marxism, surrealism, and existentialism, but on the whole Paz’s poetry eschewed politics, a topic he kept more for his essays. Paz’s work has also been influence by aspects of Buddhism and Hinduism Paz is most noted for The Labyrinth of Solitude. In 1990 Paz won the Noble Prize for Literature. (Add picture)

While I'm more familiar with his essays than his poetry, he is an original and profound thinker, and well deserved his Nobel Prize. His detailed analyses of Mexican culture are fascinating, and survive translation well.
