This class was great 'cause half the time you were goofing off in the locker rooms...and then I took Weight Training with Mr. Herzog...new teacher, I was a senior and he was so darn cute...I held the record for leg press that year and several years after that, coincidence...I don't think so...

. . .it will make a small comeback in the next ten years in Ed. curriculum due to the fact that American kids now don't care much for reading but are grossly overweight. Although a top-down education mandate will help little, complicating the matter is the increased expense of healthier school food- that takes money and schools will be looking to cut costs. Throw in the increased price of grain due to the Iowa floods and . . .okay, okay, I have to stick to the subject here. My crystal ball sez PE will make a small cutback after a decade of being forced to cut $.

In high school, this was sports for people who didn't like sports. The athletes joined a team.

For non-athletes this always looked like an hours worth of purgatory, with a bit of hell thrown in.

I was one of the lucky ones and was excused from it on the basis that, being a in the national gymnastic team, they didn't want to be responsible for anything happening to me while fooling around in the courts.. Of curse I always passed it with the highest grades. LOL. Sometimes privileges have their "benefits."

. I made it through years ago when I was in school. We played all kinds of sport type stuff. I was better at some sporty stuff than others. I always felt bad for some of the kids who took gym because if they were over weight or not very athletic they had to put up with the rotten bullies who took great delight in making these kids lives miserable.I think it is a known fact that gym is the number one class for kids to get bullied in too. I had an okay experience in gym nothing great. back in the 70s it was still all girls. I think shy me would have had hard time if it had been co-ed.

In grade school I wasn't to fond of it because I sucked at too many of the preferred activities. In high school I liked it alot better because I have at least some skills on a basketball court, even torching one of the JV players one day while amusing the hell out of one of the varsity starters. I also enjoyed weight training and doubling up my max bench press during high school, and running became a favorite since I ran track and could smoke the crap out the rest of class in anything longer than a sprint race. I was also eternally amused by the school's weight training guru, Coach Webb, who was pushing 70 years old and could still bench about 300.

It wasn't bad, as it encouraged physical activity. I'll admit, I kind of liked playing badminton.

My worst problem with P.E. was my self-consciousness about wearing gym shorts. I used to have an odd self-image about my body in those days, especially my thighs.

I think its good for kids that never are active. When I was in school it was a waste of time for me because when I got home I was riding two or three horses on a regular basis...not to mention cleaning up after them!

PE was kind of a joke in my high school. Our prinicipal actually told us once that PE was worthless, and that if it wasn't a state requirement, we wouldn't have it at all. As it was, we had PE once a week for 45 minutes. If it was warm outside, we played softball or kickball outside. During volleyball season the net was usually up in the gym, so we played volleyball. For about a month during winter we walked to the nearest bowling alley. The rest of the time we played kickball in the gym.

I enjoyed P.E.most of the time.In high school we only had to take one semester of it,which I think is rediculous. In junior high and elementary it was fun depending on what coach you had and what 'sport' you where playing, for example every six weeks we would change to a different.class and sport and I hated football yes, they made girls play football. But as well I did like softball and volleyball.Either way it wa better than math class.

I used to hate gym class (phys. ed.)! I was real active in band and I thought I got plenty of exercise in that class. The thing I hated most was showering after class was over. I think I'm okay looking, but I was real uncomfortable being in front of so many people naked. I have since found out that showering in gym class is a major issue with lots of people.

I loved PE in elementary school. It was a well needed break in the week to be able to just run around and play games. I loved it. In high school it got pretty lame. I was an athlete and it wasn't enjoyable playing games with guys who didn't want to be there. Luckily I only had to take it freshman year, so my PE memories are mostly good.

I liked it up until I was 13, it went down hill after that. At 12, I started having trouble with my asthma (even having my first attack that year). By 13, I was having issues with my knees, ankles, and hip. Apparently juvenile arthritis runs in my family, and kicked it because I was taking too many spills and injuring myself too frequently when I DID play sports. Up until I was 13, there was never a year that I didn't play 2 sports at the same time (pretty much). I miss being that active, but there's not much I can do to get back into that shape. I'm working slowly to simply be half that active (which is still far more active than the average 19 year old haha).

I don't think I've laughed quite this hard in a long time. The comments in here should be seperated as such: Those who royally suck at sports on one side; Those who have extraordinary talent on the other. I personally feel that PE should be offered, yet not required. If people want to be obese, let them be. If they want to stay in shape, let them be.

It should be based on just doing basic execises. Then the Instructor should just allow the kids to play the games they feel comfortable playing. If a kid sucks at basketball then let him play baseball.

In the beginning, especially when I was a grade 8, I hated it, because of all the testosterone and the fact that the bigger boys would make fun of and bully the year 8's, especially me! Sometimes, you get some really horrible and rough people in physed. The teachers had a real attitude! (not a bad one). They were funny. But as I got older and especially being in a class full of my friends, I found it to be a really good subject which I enjoyed. The thing which makes physed enjoyable is having good, mature company. Physed can be the worst subject if you don't have good company. On a practical note, I'd give this a 2 (not necessary to learn).

I not only hated P.E, I hated it with a PASSION. I was always the kid who threw the ball into the wrong net or couldn't throw the football for his life. The most ironic thing is that I was always the biggest kid and was perfect for both football and basketball. Once I didn't have to take it anymore I had the most fun I never had in my life.

I know some kids really hated it, but for other kids, it is a nice break in the school day and a chance to have a little fun. Some of the special ed kids I work have have ADD, ADHD, and other similar problems and gym really helps them let off some steam.

I detested this class in high school because the bigger guys would ridicule and pick on the smaller guys. I was tall, but skinny, and was constantly being made fun of, even by the teacher! In fact, I rarely had a P.E. teacher who had a good attitude. Schools should educate the mind. I didn't need school to work my body - I got plenty of that playing basketball, hiking, riding my bike, etc., after school hours.

I am an athlete. I play tennis, basketball, and I surf. And I enjoy other sports as well. But gym was one of the most dreaded classes I've ever had. I was forced to take it my entire 4 years of high school (we wouldn't graduate if we didn't pass 4 years) and I hated it every year. Nobody took it seriously. It might have been more fun if the teachers weren't so into it and just let us choose what to do, but they were like drill sergeants. Their best friend was their whistle. And as for it being the only excersize some kids have, it can hardly count as excersize. As I said, very few people took gym seriously, and every chance we got we slacked off. (By the way, I'm not overweight at all, in fact I'm underweight due to high metabolism and my OWN excersize.) And most classes are so short that by the time the students get changed and roll is taken, there are only about 20 minutes left in which to do any physical activity. That is not enough time for excersize for one day. Overall, phys. ed shouldn't be required, but if it were an elective I'm sure some people would consider it.

I loved Physical Education at school, next to English it was my favourite subject. Young people need a break after being stuck in a classroom for most parts of the day and to do exercise as a lesson is great. You need a balance at school. I think it depends on what school you go to and what teacher you have because even the kids that were less able for physical education at my school enjoyed it. As you get older and you do less and less exercise as an adult you have to discipline yourself, whilst at school you had to do it.

Easy A. There wasn't really a problem with bullies in my class because almost everyone put out some kind of effort so there really wasn't anyone to pick on. The only problem was the constant horseplay.

In Elementary School, PE was imaginative, light-hearted, recreational and just plain fun. There were playgrounds, fun interactive games, creative races, and even board game sessions. And, then came middle and high school. For one, your forced to dress in terribly-dull clothes (a white tee-shirt and black shorts???), and you have to do all kinds of dumb exercizes, lift weights (something I had not done previously), and the fun is sucked out of it. I still think the middle schools, high schools and even colleges should have playgrounds on them! Curls and tackle football can't compete with the crab walk or a good swing set!!!

I for one can say that the Physical Education program while I was going to school was a total joke. The PE teachers always chose their favorites, and their least favorites. It just overall was not technically Physical Education so to speak. Most people could pass this class without even bothering. Not to mention, I took Physical Education class when I was a teenager in Los Angeles, and 3 out of the 5 school days per week, we couldn't do anything outside because of the smog alerts....it was really bad.

Gym class isn't very important, but it is a nice break from the rest of the school day, and it's a good place to lean physical and social skills. I used to hate it because I sometimes was picked last, but my social status must have gone up, becausse I'm not picked badly anymore.

While in school, I was in good shape physically so but I didn’t really like Physical Education at all. I realized how important it was to the body, but really hated the drill sergeant that was our teacher. Granted, had I chosen to go into a branch of the military it would have been excellent training for me. But even in high school (back before it was cool to be) I was a computer nerd. I hated the lining up receptiveness that was our class. And because of a horrible soccer injury early in my high school career, that landed me in a cast, I especially hated the running around the football field because my ankle would jam and then lock. (Not a pretty site, and very painful.)

Indeed, P.E. is very underrated. Not only does it support teamwork, and a healthy lifestyle, but it helps you to understand your physical limits and abilities. You don't need athletic ability or talent to get by in the class.. As long as you show your best efforts and work at improving the level where you are at, you should be able to make the best out of the class.

You have to be a very strong, fast, person who loves sports in order to enjoy and do well in this class. If you are not in great shape, you will get ridiculed by your classmates, you'll be extremely bored and frustrated in the class, and your grades will suffer.

I have nothing against staying in shape, getting in shape or learning the various things that will make it possible to attain physical health and well being. However, I absolutely hated the experience of PE in a school setting and resented every last minute I was forced to spend in one. To me it was, purely and simply a gross waste of time that could have been better spent in English lit or Art classes. This was due in no small way to the way in which these classes were conducted and the narcissistic, power-hungry little jocks and jockettes who dominated them. To this day I have no true understanding of the sports driven mind and how some people seem to have been born with an almost sociopath need to compete and be “Number One”. I read something funny once by a guy who shared my curiosity about those obsessed with competition – he seemed to sum it all up by posing the question – just what ARE points anyway?

UGH! Without a doubt the worst subject on this list. Why people are pushing to get more physical education to schools is beyond me (alright I do know, because of growing obesity numbers but I doubt it's going to do much good). I suffered through this class for 7 years then decided I wasn't going to take it anymore - subsequently I just stopped showing up at them. Obviously I failed but I did not care one bit. Sure these classes might be good for those who like sports and are good at them but for the rest of us (and I do think we're in a majority) who just find it appallingly boring, embarrasing and ultimately torturous.

Here in Texas we are requried to take a year and a half of Physical Education, and I went ahead and took this year and half of next year to get it out of the way because I truly dread this "class". For one, here, we have probably 75 students in one gym, so it is very, very crowded. We play the same sports every day (either volleyball or basketball). Because it is so crowded, there are obviously not enough balls to go around for everyone. So if you miss a basketball shot, then someone else will take your ball and you'll never see it again. Perhaps in a small class size I may enjoy this class more, but to me it is a haven for ball-hogs and lazy people to sit around and do nothing.

Very, very underrated. I'd say this is probably the most important school subject. If you don't have your health then what have you got? Being in shape is much less expensive than having doctors keep you alive with heart medication, blood thinners, cholesterol medication, insulin or other diabetes medication and Lord knows what else. In the past 2 years where I work we have had 2 of our employees die of massive heart attacks while they were on the job due to gross obesity. They were in their late 30's - early 40's.

Teachers should not force kids to go out in the field and play team sports. I was a kid with Asperger's syndrome and was unable and unwilling to play sports. Let kids who don't like sports pursue individual exercise, like bicycle riding, walking, whatever -- what does it matter as long as they are getting some exercise? Some people are simply not into team sports!

I know it's important, but I was on swim team and track, so this was a little redundant for me. I'd have rather spent my time taking an extra art studio class. My gym teacher was a serious wench too. In order to preserve as much time as possible for academics, it would have made more sense for kids not i
