 | myspace-365138839 (1) 07/21/2008 | I only wish this class would have prepared me better for English in college...I don't think some of those English teachers gave us the tools we needed to form sentences much less....

 | jcb111 (0) 07/11/2008 | depends on the type of english. composition and selective reading english is aight. but reading an old ass english book like shaksphere and writing an essay analyzing it blows harder than even the most difficult math.

 | myspace-30849171 (1) 05/06/2008 | Loved it, especially with Mr. Wilf. He was the best and really taught me a lot about life and writing- even reading. He made me see literature in a different light.

 | GenghisTheHun (168) 04/29/2008 | Great subject--it is necessary for life and for jobs. Reading many of the postings on this site, it must have been abolished as a school discipline some time ago.

 | MissPackRat4Jesus (38) 04/28/2008 | This was my favorite subject! It allowed a lot of room for creativity. There was plenty of opportunity to experiment with words and phrases, and to lose myself in some of the most wonderful literature ever written. I really had a lot of fun.

 | meg10222 (1) 01/13/2008 | I used to want to be an English major, but lost the passion after several tedious classes and teachers who favored only one or two students and ignored the remaining ones. Oh well. However, I do love grammar.

 | SchadenfreudianSlip (18) 05/01/2007 | Nothing (to me) is more important than being understood; don't we all? I'd also like to understanding someone else by reading what they think and feel. For now, however, I'd just be damn happy if people would show that they were taught how to use an apostrophe to show possession or contraction.

 | ClassicTVFan47 (36) 05/01/2007 | Grammar rules can become tedious, but the greatest English classes are where you can be creative. As someone who's written over 150 short stories, I always enjoy the opportunity to use my imagination!

 | twansalem (36) 05/01/2007 | My biggest issue with English classes are that you have to write papers just for the sake of writing papers. If I have a reason for writing about something, it's not that big of a deal. But if I have to write some random paper, my mind comes to a screaching halt.

 | Broodinghen (12) 04/30/2007 | I'm German and I'd advocate a thorough instruction in the use of one's native language for every country.
English as first foreign language was one of my favorite subjects from the start. No idea if my English is always correct, but I do more and more of my verbal thinking in it. Somehow my ideas come quicker and are better when I try to conceive them in English.

 | irishgit (138) 04/30/2007 | I had the good fortune to have uniformly good teachers in English and English Lit. All of them were dedicated and competent to a large degree, and all of them had a strong respect for the written word, both that of their students and their subjects.

The only subject I excelled at. I preferred the study of fiction and methods of writings as opposed to the grammar aspect of English.

 | Gentle Jude (23) 02/14/2005 | In a practical sense, I give this subject a 5 (Vital to learn.) If people payed attention in English class, there wouldn't be so much of this shorthand SMS writing, people would spell properly etc. On a personal note, it depends on what teacher you have. Some teachers can make the subject really boring and hard, whilst some make it more enjoyable. With me, I didn't like learning all of these novels, I was more of a short story writer.

 | Seraph (8) 09/28/2004 | Here's hoping this rating gives this subject the boost it needs to trounce Geography! If you have the right teacher, English can be a blast, especially if you have a natural writing ability (i.e. most girls).

 | Ms Skinner (0) 08/28/2004 | English being one of my stronger aspects (actually its just about my strongest) I cant say its not good. I have a great teacher, and i've been successful in writing competitions and english tests. Reading novels are okay, provided they dont drag on and on and on..

 | WarGamefan93 (3) 08/28/2004 | I think it's one of those unneccessary classes. Most people that speak bad know how to speak, they just find it easier to speak unproper English. And it's pretty hard for left-brainers. I am not the creative type and have trouble writing. I think they should split the class and have grammer as a core class and writing as a choice class.

 | Molfan (57) 05/07/2004 | For the most part a four. Learning all the grammar part was not always the best but if you include literature with this It brings it up higher. I have always loved to read and English ties in with learning to read. In school in high school Literature classes were one of my favorites. through English and literature, I still read books because I want to.

 | Snoopy (3) 07/04/2003 | English was another favorite of mine. The only problem I had was the required reading lists. I hate being told what I have to read, although I did enjoy some of the books I had to read, like "To Kill a Mockingbird" and I never would have picked up those books on my own. I was also pretty decent at writing and grammar.

 | lukskywlkr. (3) 06/14/2003 | English was always my best subject for some reason. Not that I really enjoyed it any more than I did other subjects, it was just that it came naturally to me. You may not can tell any of this by reading my reviews, but blame that on my typing skills.

 | abichara (60) 05/30/2003 | English class is definitely very necessary. It teaches you how to communicate your ideas; that's essential for proper participation in our society. People who do not use vocabulary, grammar, or spelling properly many times get passed up for job promotions etc. because this is indicative of a lack of professionalism, so listen in English class. As for literature, my interest level waxed and waned in English class according to the book I was reading at the time, but nonetheless, the classic tomes which many people have already mentioned offered many lessons on the social issues which we have to deal with everyday.

 | CastleBee (81) 05/29/2003 | English classes are another fond academic memory for me. I could hold my own in the predictably structured and sometimes blasé Grammar classes. But I considered making it successfully through those tasks as only an entrance fee to the much more fascinating topic of literature. This is where I met the minds of authors who would become life-long friends. These were the people with the ability to inspire me to read beyond the assigned works and to add many other non-curricular authors to my list. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to have been introduced to geniuses like Shakespeare, Twain, Dickens, London, Steinbeck, Hawthorne, Orwell and Lee and masterpieces that ranged from “Romeo and Juliet” to “To Kill a Mockingbird”. The enrichment, enchantment and dimension they have given my life is immeasurable.

 | Janey_Lane (0) 05/27/2003 | English was always my fav subject at school simply because it was the easiest. Where I live -Sweden- it is mandatory to learn Engish and if you don't get a passing grade in it, you get held back. English is essential if you want to get somewhere in life, wether it is to travel or work overseas a solid knowledge of the English language is, if not a neccesity (which I do think it is), at least a major advantage.

 | reeny (3) 05/26/2003 | English has fowarded me the opportunity to read a lot of excellent books. One of my favorites is "The Marrow of Tradition" by Charles W. Chesnut. I love to read and write and that love came from what I learned in school from my English classes. To be honest though, I think most people put this as the top school subject because it's easier than most subjects.

 | Redoedo (39) 05/24/2003 | I am a Freshman in High School, so I have decided that each year I will come back and update my opinion of each school subject as I go through High School. English is a very essential subject throughout both grade school and high school. It is necessary to know proper spelling and grammar and to enjoy the literary works of the past and present. I'll admit that English can drag on (and it has this year), but overall, it is essential and I'm sure if taught in a more unorthadox fashion could be made to be more interesting. This year, we read: "Wuthering Heights", "Anthem", "Lord of the Flies" and "Romeo and Juliet". I thoroughly enjoyed all of those novels except for "Lord of the Flies" because I thought that it was written very poorly. As BigBaby said, if the book you are reading is fun, then this class can be fun. I enjoyed writing essays throughout the year. My teacher, Ms. Bialas, is a very good teacher and I'm probably going to miss her class now that the year is coming to a close. She truly is a teacher who seems to care about her students, as she usually takes 15 or 20 minutes out of class to discuss with us the importance of getting involved, maintaining high averages, saving for colleges, etc. It's a shame there aren't more teachers who can get away from the cirriculum for a few minutes to truly attempt to have an impact on their student's lives and futures. In the final analysis, English, while a bore at times, can be fun also, and this year, its been a pretty good experience.

 | RebelYell1861 (9) 05/22/2003 | The king of all languages. This was the most tolerable of all classes in my opinion throughout junior high and high school. I guess I liked the earlier years of it because it was so easy and the later years of it because it was primarily essays and I got to shove my opinions in my teachers' faces. ha

 | kamylienne (77) 05/22/2003 | Sometimes fun, definately essential. I wish so many classic books weren't banned. Forcing kids to read makes them NOT want to do it, so perhaps it'd be good to let the students pick their books once in a while. As far as grammar and punctuation is concerned, I think that many people definately could use a refresher course (myself included).

 | BIGBABY (10) 05/22/2003 | English is a pretty good subject to learn things from, but it can be boring. English is basically vocabulary, books, and writing papers. The fun level of the class can vary. If the book your reading id good, then its fun. Otherwise, it can be a bore.
