The fight with Palpatine wasn't that great, but I can understand why, and it had more to with Ian's age (although that was the essential problem). They just didn't have enough time for a Jedi Master who wasn't part of The Gang. Still, he was in there, he was a presence, and he kind of filled out the script nicely. (Supporting Actors, they're called!) Yeah, I know it was Samuel L. Jackson, but looks where Jimmy Smits scenes ended up.

 | StanUzbeck (14) 09/15/2003 | So how can we discuss this character when there is so little of him in the movies so far. Also, George Lucas' scripts for Phantom and Clones were so bad that they actually make Samuel L. Jackson seem like a hack. He is not a hack, he's a talented actor, but he seems almost embarrassed to be delivering the idiotic lines they gave him. He'd better have a lot more to do in the third movie, because so far he's a pretty minor character. So was Boba Fett, but at least he had a cool costume and weapons.

 | lukskywlkr. (3) 06/22/2003 | A little aloof in the Phantom Menace, he proved his mettle in Attack of the Clones. However, at the end of Clones, when Obi-wan and Anakin took on Dooku, and then Yoda right behind them, why didn't Mace Windu head to the hangar to help? He was supposedly one of the most powerful jedi, and could have taken on Dooku by himself, yet he just kind of disappeared. By the way, I read in Star Wars Insider that the first name George Lucas ever came up with for the entire Star Wars saga was "Mace Windu", so he's not exactly a contrived character.
