 | teagolf (0) 03/01/2007 | i had the privelege of watching roy at KU. he was the best at getting everything from his players, almost to a fault. he's a perfectionist. he has his teams ready too early usually. he wears his players out and by the time they need to peak for tournament, they're dead. this happened early in his career and hopefully he'll learn to peak when appropriate. he is the best current coach in college basketball. this begrudgingly coming from a Jayhawk.

 | JayHeel (0) 12/27/2005 | Roy Heel is by far the best coach & recruiter in CBB today. His coming back to UNC has enraged a lot of jealousy & at KU after he won the NCAA title in only his 2nd year.Duke should be trembling & lashing out because Royheel is gonna pay em back slowly & whip their tails year in & year out until Duke fades away as UNC's rival.I guess it will start being someone else the next 10 years.Royheel plays the best style of up tempo BB in the College game & is a silky smooth dresser.Get over it Dookies,Roy's here to stay & wait until you see that DYNASTY he's gonna have. 4 NCAA Titles in 5yrs. is in reach.

 | ktriddle (0) 11/18/2005 | This man is CLASS personified. If all college coaches had Roy's class, ethics, and genuine interest in the well-being of his players, the game would be much better off. The best college coach in America, and unlike the egomaniac at Duke, is as humble and unassuming as he is great.

Still a top 10 coach.

 | bluetarbaby (8) 08/01/2005 | I kind of like this guy (lol). I was watching that behind the scenes of the championshp season DVD, and afterward I realized something.......................those people who were saying we weren't a team and all talent ARE INSANE! Ya'll should've seen how well those boys got along, how intense the practices were, etc. And I neve realized how much one of the guys Roy was. He danced with them in the locker room, joked around with them constantly, and it even showed him and McCants talking and goofing around with each other (I never expected that). And for those who haven't seen the DVD, you have NO IDEA how much all that not a team crap helped them. Roy was infuriated! And so were the boys. After every win in the tourney they'd run in the locker room hootin and hollerin, screaming, HOW'S THAT FOR A TEAM, BABY! That not a team media blitz was the best thing that ever happened to them. But my favorite part is when it shows all the Iowa State players saying before the game, we can run with anybody. that's our game. maybe they can't run with US. Then it cuts to Jackie Manuel and he goes allright, let's run then and cracks a big smile. Then it goes in to this dramatic bad ass song playing behind higlights of our boys runnin' and dunkin' and screamin' all over Iowa State's helpless faces. Iowa State looked so HORRIFIED and helpless. That was sweet. It's also really cool when they show the locker room after we beat UCONN in their building, and Roy runs in their and goes god almighty this is FUN! And there is one scene from our locker room that will INFURIATE Kansas fans more so than they already are, maybe to the point of.........well, I won't give it away. Check it out yourselves. You can order it on tarheelblue.com. Order quick though because they're sold out and you probably won't get it until October or November. I ordered mine in April and just got it last week. I'm telling you, their has never been anything that allows this much access into Carolina. You're virtually spying on them. From practices, to locker rooms, team plane.........all that. It's awesome. It even shows nearly MJ and Dean Smith's entire stay in the locker room after the title game - laughing and hugging. It's great. Roy hugs Dean and goes, thank you coach and Dean goes, No, thank you, son. I'm telling you, it's a wet dream for a Carolina fan. Actually, it's probably really cool for fans of other teams too, besides NC State, Dook, or Kansas. Oh, and I didn't mention it's got an IMAX vibe too. All the highlights and stuff are not like what you'd see on TV. All the camera angles are from under the basket and the sideline, behind the bench. It feels like you're actuaaly there.

You'll never know (or maybe you will) how much this means to all of us in this great state of ours. WHO SAYS YOU CAN NEVER GO HOME AGAIN?! LOVE YA, BABY. We knew you (and the boys) could do it. Never doubted ya'll a second. Go enjoy it. And later........
.......................tell the 'Raleigh News and Observer' to shove it up their a%s, and BAN them from the locker room from now on! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH, BABY! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!...................
........................UPDATE: Except Robbi Pickeral for 'the Observer'. That's our girl - let her in on all the the locker room fun in the coming years.

 | iluvSeanMay42 (0) 03/29/2005 | The second best coach(behind dean smith) ~ i'm so sick of people callin him a traitor... if u loved carolina u would be extatic! hes awesome dagummit! he's not afraid to get in a players face or take them outta the game for screwin up ~ he will always be a tarheel... he coached at carolina before he even went to kansas... so why does kansas deserve him? they don't! and they suck this year because they don't have him, but carolina does and theres no doubt in my mind, carolina (lead by roy williams!!) will be the 2005 NCAA champsss!! we love you and appreciate everything you do roy!!! We're so glad you came home again! UPDATE! Excuse me.. dean smith won 2 NCAA tournaments... thats better then alot of other schools... so HAWKBRAND...i would stop tryin to sound cool UPDATE: I'm SO SICK of people sayin he hasnt achieved anything because he hasnt won a national championship... get over yourself.. have u won a national championship? At least he's been in final fours(this year for instance)! Can some coaches even say that? geez, go rag on them

 | markmoseley (0) 02/15/2005 | Makes a Average team good and a good team better. He either needs to coach his half coach offense better or figure out a way to keep teams from forcing him to play it. He will be Hall of fame one day, But he needs to learn a little more to become an elite coach.

 | vandrosia (0) 01/12/2005 | Biggest choker in college basketball. Greatness is measured by rings, not by how many wins you have during the regular seasons. The guy can't win in March when it truly counts. Why is it that his teams never win in the tournament? There are three things guaranteed in life--death, taxes, and Roy Williams tearfully crying I'm so proud of my boys in March after another tournament loss.

 | Wavebacker (25) 01/07/2005 | Overrated. Hasnt won a National Title and has had Kansas teams choke in big games in the NCAA's. He's like the Houston Astros or the Dallas Mavericks - can win a lot in the regular season, but can't win the big ones. He sure seems like a great guy. A down-home genuine and honest man who would be a great guy to play under, but until he wins it all, I'm just not completely sold on him.

 | wut-in-TARnation (0) 12/09/2004 | Best recruiter in the business. Two top 30 kids signed letters of intent on Wednesday, WITHOUT TAKING AN OFFICIAL VISIT TO CHAPEL HILL! Felton's new backup, Quentin Thomas, never took an official visit! In total, 4 studs signed letters of intent this past wednesday - ( Hansbruogh, Green, Frasor, Ginyard.) No matter what happens this year, Carolina is back! All thanks to 'Ol Roy. I love Roy, and I have faith in him. I don't think most Carolina fans truly understand how lucky we are to have him. I don't think we truly comprehend how good he is. Well, don't worry, we will. It was definitely scary when Dean retired, but I don't know- I'm starting to think we'll be okay. Win big this season or not - we're gonna be okay. That said, I DO think we'll win big this year.

 | bluedevils (0) 10/15/2004 | Come and listen to my story 'bout a coach named Roy
Played at Carolina when he was just a boy
Then one day he was in the Final Four
He liked Kan-sas, but he loved Carolina more
(two faced that is, baby blue snake in the grass)
Well the next thing you know he was on the phone with Dean
Said the players don't like it, 'cause Doherty is mean
Roy said he wouldn't shout and he said he wouldn't cuss
So the took poor Matt and throwed he underneath the bus
(Shang-hied, file 13)
THE CAROLINA TARHOLES!!!!
Well now it's time to say good-bye to Matt and all his friends
It was Dick Baddour and the players who finally done him in
But you're all invited back this year to the same lo-ca-lity
To watch Duke whoop Carolina 98 to 73
(Butt whoopin that is...y'all come back now ya hear?!)

 | Loretta28054 (0) 09/17/2004 | Roy gets sh*t for not doing this or that, but, fact of the matter is, if the boys do what he tells them to do, NOBODY can touch them! It's not his fault he gets disobeyed from time to time. Do what he says and anybody in the top 25 will get destroyed by 20!

 | NYC KU Fan (0) 05/19/2004 | As a KU fan, I will always love/hate Roy Williams. He did a fantastic job for us and put our program back in the elite in terms of wins, and not just in terms of tradition, where we were always elite. I like Self, but we hired him as a proven winner. We hired Roy as a nobody, and I liked that. He was ours. I just have to say that I think starting over at UNC was a very poor choice for him from a career perspective and family aside. His road at UNC is not being easy at all. He should have finished out his career at KU. We would have named buildings after him.

 | NJSloan (0) 04/08/2004 | Roy is a good coach with glitches. He will is a great regular season coach but he makes critical mistakes. HIs team played zones despite the fact that Juan Dixon and Gerry McNamara each destroyed it and he stayed with it. He'll make little mistakes like that and his teams seem too tight come tournament time.

 | VirileVagabond (32) 03/31/2004 | Coach Roy Williams is a tough nut to crack. Williams sure can lead a horse to the trough, but can he make it drink (ie he still has not won a national championship). He has not thus far, but perhaps coming back home to Chapel Hill and the change of scenery will do the trick. Another certainty is that Williams teams are always strong in the fundamentals, which is not always an easy task with today's college players who want the ball with flash and style. The relatively low rating this far (#15 as of this post) is obviously due to Kansas fans venting their anger for Williams' departure; however, while their ire is understandable, it really isn't justified, and certainly shouldn't result in a less than a top 10 ranking on this list, a nice example of people rating with their emotions rather than their heads.

 | UNC4Ever (0) 02/09/2004 | Roy Williams has hundreds and hundreds of NCAA wins. Many of those wins are even against great Big 12 teams like Baylor and Kansas State. But as soon as he coaches at Florida State he blows a 26 point lead. And don't even get me started about Clemson. Maybe if Sean May spent more time dunkin the basketball instead of dunkin donuts, the Tarholes wouldn't be below .500 in the ACC for the 3rd straight year. I hope Matt Doherty is laughing.

 | KUbaby (0) 08/03/2003 | Roy Williams is a good practice coach but not in games. He doesn't call time-outs when needed he doesn't pull players out when needed. In my opinion Roy Williams shouldn't have left Kansas but he did and there's nothing I can do about that. Good luck to him at North Carolina because he is sure going to need it.

He has an amazing mind for the game and is a teacher and a motivator. He has great relationships with his players and he cares about them most players will love to have that kind of a coach, he will get a championship soon, he is too good of a coach not to. I just hope those kids at UNC think it will be the way it was with Daughtery there, no no no.
