Anything in the circle of Arlo Guthrie, Sarah Lee Guthrie, and or Pete Seeger is my cup of tea.

I like some of it a good deal, and there's no denying its pervasive influence. Its a little hard to define at times, and could easily be stretched to cover a wide range of musical styles.
I owe it a debt for aiding in the seduction of numerous "serious" girls back in university too....

I like folk music, it comes from the heart

I like folk type music once in a while (ah-la Neil Young type music) cause it usually has symbolism/meaning, makes you think and it can be deep.
I'm not a freak...I' m just special 06/20/2008

Mixed bag. . .I don't own any CD's but I've been to my share of bars where folk music fits right in. Then again, one must consider folk's immense influence on artists such as Dylan (just for starters). . .

I like a fair amount of it- Fairport Convention, Tim Hardin, early Dylan... but nothing gets me running away faster than the early 60's Chip/ Biff wholesome type of white guy with a flannel or any upper class warbling white chick with a grin and a battered acoustic playing at being part of the proletariat ...Way too vague a term anyway, could mean anything from traditional Bulgarian music to Phil Ochs to two, I have to say, hideous lesbians with acoustic guitars naming themselves after a relatively obscure color...

If we're referring to what is often called singer-songwriter folk music, I have to say that I'm not really a big fan. Some of the music even sounds pretty good, but the often overly political lyrics really annoy me.

Folk music by its broadest definition takes as many different forms as there are types of folks. The modern folk music enthusiast is as likely to listen to Tejano from the Tex-Mex border, or Juju from Africa, or Gypsy music from Eastern Europe as he is to be listening to guys with beards and banjos from Greenwich Village circa 1962. Folk music is a musical expression of the roots of a culture. Arguably Hip Hop is folk music to you if you grew up in the core of a major American urban center in the 80's and 90's.

It takes me back to the early and mid 60's. Anyone remember Richard & Mimi Farina, "Celebration for a Grey Day?"

There's Folk music which is a specific genre and then there's folk music, which is any music that's evolved from communities and is handed down from generation to generation. I love what can be called folk-blues which was strong back in the 60s with people like Davy Graham, Bert Jansch, John Fahey and John Renbourn and which people like Martin Simpson are doing today. I dont like trad English folk which is all a bit hey nonny no and fol de riddle di hey. As with most of the genre listings here, it's too broad a definition to make worthwhile comment on

While I'll admit some of it can be Godawful,Folk is the ROOTS of darn near everything in music. It gave birth Country and the Blues, and inspired everyone from Dylan,Zep and the Dead to the Stones.Folk is a very vast spectrum spread all over the planet, and I enjoy a lot of "traditional" folk from many cultures: Africa, the Carribean,Middle Eastern etc. There's also a wealth of songs that came over with the European settlers, including maritime "sea chanties",work songs, and childrens songs.Certainly, there's plenty of variety and it acts to preserve a part of cultural history close to the hearts of the common people often ignored by History books. Alan Lomax preserved a lot of this on his label "Rounder Records",which includes obscure bluesmen of the deep south as well as music from all over the world, including island cultures now defunct.

This can be beautiful. Sadly seems to be a lost art form. I still enjoy listening to some of the folk artists from the 60's now and then.

Popular music, before testosterone-soaked mongoloids plugged it into the nearest wall-socket and turned up the volume. What we have today is but the pale after-image of thousands of years of lost music.

Folk is a joke

There are some folk artists that I like. Folk songs sometimes tell the best stories, unfortunately, the music form hasn't been very popular in a long time.
