Salsa, like most current music, isn't what it used to be... and much of what's labeled Salsa these days is really catsup, but thanks to film and video, youngsters can get an idea of what it was like in the golden age.
If you buy only one salsa CD, I highly recommend La Tierna, Conmovedora, Bamboleadora by Celia Cruz y la Sonora Matancera. It was recorded in New York City after the band 'escaped' from Castro's counter-revolutionary Cuba. The influence of New York City streets can be felt in every song, though the music is 100% Afro Cuban.
Celia's only female competition was the mad firebrand, La Lupe, though Olga Guillot's beautiful romantic records were equally popular in the Latin world.

I love salsa! I love the fact that almost all Mexican restaurants serve it for free and that many other restaurants have taken to doing the same thing. Because people love it so much!

It's great when travelling to different countries & hearing what music they listen to to dance along. :) But other than that, i don't generally listen to it. So for me, it's OK. :)
