 | RaterX (0) 09/20/2007 | Founding masters of the punk/new wave craft. Very underrated in the USA. Their most popular album barely exceeded 100,000 U.S. copies sold.

 | Limpin' Trenchfoot (16) 10/25/2006 | IMO, the most overrated band of the 76 - 79 UK punk/new wave era. Grating shouty vocals, tinny guitar tones, lack of humour, preachy lyrics. This was largely down to Paul Weller, a man who has garnered accolades and respect among critics, fans and other bands in the UK but Gawd knows why. It's not so much the hand-me down Beatles and Kinks tunes of his solo phase, the cod-soul of the Style Council era that gets me but simply the fact that it's all been done with such po-faced seriousness and self importance. Even his most rabid admirers have to admit he's not known for being cheery and humourous. Not just in the world of entertainment but in life in general, you can pretty much get away with anything as long as you dont take yourself too seriously.

A truly iconic band that deserved more respect here in the states.

 | oscargamblesfro (76) 12/13/2005 | Closer in spirit to The Who, The Kinks , The Small Faces, or The Move than , say The Sex Pistols, The Damned or The Buzzcocks, as they were heavily influenced by The Mod Movement of the 60's rather than punk. I think they were ok, but never got what the fuss was all about. Probably too "British" to ever make it big here, though leader Paul Weller has done some fine work in more recent times.

 | Guava Monkey (4) 05/13/2004 | Why I dont rate the Jam. Well, Weller's 'singing' for a start, for want of a better word. Secondly, I dont rate his guitar playing. Thirdly, I never could stick all those intense worthy bands with their lefty politics and none were more so than the Jam. Socialism doesnt work Paul. Never has, never will.

 | ellajedlicka21 (5) 02/29/2004 | They were neck and neck with the Clash in British popularity from the late '70s punk/new wave era. All Mod Cons along with Sound Affects are great albums. A socially conscious band, songs like That's Entertainment and Down in the Tubestation at Midnight are magnificent works. One of the best bands from this movement.

 | andyknoedler (0) 08/12/2003 | Paul Weller and company were real groundbreakers in the early 1980s music scene in the UK.

 | Ruby (15) 08/06/2003 | If the Pistols and Clash were the obvious #1 and #2 bands of the English punk scene, a la the Stones/Beatles of the 60s, then the Jam was the Who. Singing about being misfits, sounding tough and playing tough, but with this wounded soul that told you they were good guys after all. The later Jam got more soulful and some of that's OK, but I prefer the early stuff ("Away from the Numbers" is a favorite). The lengthy best of "Snap" was my introduction and its better than the single albums I tracked down...
