Al Capp is a controversial figure whose comic strip, though not exactly Nobel Prize material, still makes most contemporary strips appear absolutely pallid by comparison. He was unusual in the comic strip world in that he was both a superior draftsman and a good-to-great idea man. His General Bullmoose sequences in particular are classics. He soured with coming of the sixties, but from about 1940 to 1960 he was deservedly acclaimed as one of America's most talented humorists.

This was a great cartoon. So many phrases from it entered into the language--the whammy; under a black cloud; skunkworks (Area 51 fans know this one), etc.

Al Capp was probably a genius. I loved Li'l Abner but didn't really notice it much until a couple of years before it came to an end. I've managed to buy some reprints in books, but they're awfully expensive. Li'l Abner was very funny - and cerebral.

The Wizard of Oz of the south. The worse the characters, the better I liked it. I was born in Atlanta, so I didn't think the characters were supposed to represent reality...maybe in the mountains...

As a Southerner I am very offended by this strip. Original cartoonist and creator Al Capp was a native New Englander (born in New Haven, CT)which might explain his yankee distain for those not of his region. He was a guest speaker at our college in the 1960's. This incredible jerk arrived stinking drunk, groped several coeds, and tried to assault one who was escorting him around campus. His speech was cancelled and he was told to never return to our state or he would face arrest.

Totally politically incorrect by today's standards with something in it to offend everyone. I love it.
