English has been my favorite language ever since I first heard it spoken Actually, I herd it first being sung, and became fascinated by it, even as I couldn't understand a single word. It has such a natural flowing characteristic that is in itself, a melodious language. Later on, when I started to learn it in school, I became even more fascinated by its simplicity and convenient structure. Unlike other languages which are extremely complex in syntax and grammar, English is an easy to learn and speak language. And perhaps this is the reason that it has become the most spoken language in the world. Incidentally, in the whole world there are schools and private learning centers which all offer English as one of the language to learn, while other languages tend to be more regional or limited. I am still in the learning process and still manage to find occasional words or syntax constructions that are fascinating. Love to speak it, write it and even think in it.

It does a great job of adapting and picking up and creating new words. Thankfully it is so dynamic it doesn't have some stupid Academie like the French. English is the language of the conqueror though. A foreign species, it kills off the native tongues.

Definitely one of the hardest languages to learn for foreigners and even non-ones. It's taken me, a native speaker, my whole life just to mostly master the grammar rules and spelling. But it was definitely fun along the way. It is arguably the most useful language in the world, since most people in other countries will speak English to visitors who don't already speak the local language. Plus, it's great that one can change words around and even shorten sentences and still be understood. Another cool thing is the use of stress: "I went there" has a completely different meaning than "I went there."

Despite its great qualities, English has downsides that vary from person to person. Firstly, grammar rules can be a nightmare. Secondly, spelling (especially on the internet) can be tough and those not willing to put in the effort to spell words correctly can frustrate others and possibly themselves.

Ultimately, a very useful and beautiful language combining Latin, French and Greek. Very cool once you get the hang of it.

Complex and poetic. . .for every rule there is an exception. . .and a few stupid things that make you scratch your head- try explaining the letter "X" to a group of Chinese students. . .

One of the most widely spoken languages in the world. I feel sorry for anyone that cannot speak, understand or even read English. It is by far one fo the hardest languages to learn and grasp. The spelling alone and how the words are prenounced can cause so much confusion.

Although it's gramatically simple in that it doesnt have conjugations of nouns and adjectives - like you get in German, Russian and Italian - pronunciation must be a pain the ar*e for learners becuase it's not phonetic. E.g the words 'cough', 'bough', 'slough'(as in to shed skin) and 'through' all contain 'ough' but are all pronounced ddifferently.

Whats up my peeps? Anyway I chose to rate "english" cause' I got an interesting bit of private mail from a fellow RIA member. Do you want to know who it is? Well ya out of luck cause I aint no snitch but I'll tell ya this. This dude was ripping on my english and saying nasty crap bout' me, but I didn't even trip cause' that fool couldnt spell for s*%t either so he's a hypocrite. I even was nice enough to tell him piece out(a term of endearment.) I simply popped my collar, and shaked the hater off my shoulders. Sometimes a pimp got to do what a pimp got to do ya feel me. Ya would think a guy with lots of friends on this site would be nicer to new reviewers, but he's just a hater ya mean? Im not even going to trip about it, Im cool with myself and thats all that matters fa sho.

It's the only language I know.

No complicated gender roles like french, small alphabet, but the spelling rules are just ridiculous.

Historians will state: This once dominant language died out as the authorities did not require its use and no longer taught the language or required that it be taught in the schools. Argot and slang became standard due to a decadent popular culture and the authorities finally threw it out and required everyone to learn ancient Sumerian.

Has one of the worst spelling systems ever. There is a very weak concordance between spelling and pronounciation.

Far to strict and too many rules yet no gender adds to basic boring and more confusion. The grunts and squeeks of chineese are more dramatic than this......

Should be taught around the world to be a universal language. English is precise, fairly straightforeward in pronunciation and lacks a confusing gender system. I would rename the language and call it Terran.

I love it because I speak it. Also, having learnt all of the languages of the world (and I still am a moron), I have to echo Samjung's assertion that it is, indeed, easier than all of them combined. Grammatical gender is pesky in languages and at least English does not have that.

Samjung, are you dense? English may seem like an easy language to you because it's your native tongue, but in reality it is very complex. I think we should encourage immigrants to learn English, but you have to understand that they won't start speaking it fluently overnight.

Most people in this world DO learn English and some people seem to speak it better than the Brits and American people! And I think people should be encouraged to learn languages. My partner is fluent in French, knows German, Italian and can even read Latin. I'm very envious of him! I also think its rude of people to assume that they don't have to learn a country's language when they visit - and by that I just mean the basics - because 'everyone can speak English anyway'

Everyone should be made to learn English as a standard language. It is far easier to learn than the rest of the languages in the world combined. It would certainly make the world an easier place to live in, and would get rid of the morons that think they're so intelligent because they learned X language.

Can't argue with the fact that it's the official language of business. What prevents it from getting a full 5 stars is the fact that it's overly complicated (look at how many colliqualisims and idioms there are) and thus makes it very difficult to learn as a second language.

They should change the name to American which would make much more sense, seeing as how in America we use different words or phrases than in England. While learning Spanish, I realized how much harder it would be to learn English as a second language. How blessed I am, to have learned it as my first language rather than trying to learn it all now!

A very versatile language - it's closest relative being Frisian. It is the combination of Germanic construction and Latin that gives it its comprehensiveness, plus all the other additional anglicised words from elsewhere helps it maintain its internationalism. If it were based on spelling alone, English wouldn't be considered the lingua franca if it weren't for the media/business and internet.

English is awesome! Or great, divine, superb, rockin', wonderful, etc. for a number of reasons: 1. Modularity. Take a root, add a prefix of your choice, maybe spice it up with a suffix or two, and presto! You now have a delicious word! Mix and match to taste. 2. Absorption. What other language sucks up foreign words with such gusto, such pizazz, such je ne sais quoi? 3. Precision. With a storehouse of hundreds of thousands of unique words, and endless modularity, the only problem you might have is deciding, for example, if you're starving, ravenous, or just a bit peckish.

It's my native language, but I think it is overrated. English, in fact, is extremely hard for foreigners to learn I hear. Spelling and pronounciation can be at times quite illogical, take for example the following humorous poem which demonstrates this fact: I take it you already know of tough and bough and cough and dough? Some may stumble, but not you, on hiccough, thorough, slough, and through? So now you are ready, perhaps, to learn of less familiar traps? Beware of heard, a dreadful word, that looks like beard, but sounds like bird. And dead, it's said like bed, not bead; for goodness' sake, don't call it deed! Watch out for meat and great and threat. (They rhyme with suite and straight and debt.) A moth is not a moth in mother, nor both in bother, broth in brother.

I think this would be tough to learn, since it is so illogical. On the other hand the vocabulary is extremely rich, having sometimes the same word from Germanic, Norse, French, and/or Latin (kingly, royal, regal as an example of three synonyms which have slightly different meanings, and come from three different languages)

English is, believe it or not, a tough language for foreigners to learn, especially when it comes to spelling and pronunciation. Try explaining to foreigners, who almost invariably pronounce words based on their spelling which follows consistent rules, that you do not pronounce the ough in bough the same as you do in tough. Then toss in through and you really confuse them. That notwithstanding, English is versatile, constantly developing new words (especially in the technical field), and is becoming ever more widespread. It must be a great language because so many people worldwide want to learn it (or have to in order to compete).

What can't you say about English. It has to be the most functional language worldwide due to the last two hundred years of cultural and technological dominance by the English speaking world, resulting in English being the most common language on the globe (counting primary and secondary speakers). The English language has roots in Celtic, Germanic and Romance languages making it approachable by most Indo-European speakers, not to mention English has twice as many words as its nearest competitors. Moreover, English is quick to adopt foreign terms and phrases which makes it viable, functional and modern (without any irritating gendered nouns).
