 | Enkidu (37) 04/18/2004 | It is a beautiful language, Pablo is right--I'm trying to learn a little of it so I can go down to Brazil later this year. Don't make the mistake of trying to pronounce it like Spanish, even though it looks similar; the sounds are a lot different. However if you know some Spanish it helps because it has a lot of cognates.

 | StanUzbeck (14) 11/12/2003 | Lovely language, but frustrating to me. I am not very familiar with the Brazilian dialect, but I am with that spoken in Portugal. I live in a city with a sizable Portuguese community, and I hear them sometimes on the bus. It's frustrating because European Portuguese sounds very much like French if you're not paying too close attention. Since I am fluent in French, I always get the feeling that I should be understanding what the people are saying, but I don't. The accent may be similar to French, but the language is different. I also painted a house for this Portuguese family and they were incredibly loud, screaming at each other in Portuguese from across the house, holding entire conversations this way. It sounds nice but I can't stand hearing it because I get frustrated trying to understand it, something I cannot help. I understand this is a pretty stupid reason for disliking the language, so it gets 4 out of 5.

 | Rosetta (0) 08/21/2003 | Portuguese, not Spanish, is the most-spoken language on the South American continent.
(The other major official languages of South America are Spanish, Quechua, Aymara, French, Dutch, English.)
