I would like to express my opinion on the fact that almost EVERY opinion on this list has only left 2 comments- 1 FOR Matt Gonzalez and 1 AGAINST Gavin Newsom. I don't approve of this type of Organized Rating so I am giving you 1 star!
maria vergas 12/11/2003
He has San Francisco progressives fooled - for now. He is arrogant, has disdain for his colleagues, and is work shy. He is the worst thing that ever happened to progressive politics.
CARLOSUSF 12/08/2003
He looks like someone I can trust and can count on to listen to the average San Franciscan.
engineer 12/08/2003
He stands for integrity and a strong desire to make a positive difference for the good of a great community. Matt is not for sale! He will be a better mayor than Gavin and Brown together.
dakini 12/07/2003
The smartest most honest intelligent sensible person to run in a political capacity in years.
SFnative 12/06/2003
I met Matt ten years ago when we both lived and worked in the same neighborhood. He is one of the most honest, intelligent, and compassionate individuals I have ever known.
peluche 12/05/2003
Matt Gonzalez appears to be the impossible - an honest politician.
Nutmeg 12/02/2003
A principled guy, rejecting even the well heeled Angela Alioto who tried to cut a deal with him. In this non partisan race, this green baiting seems bizarre and innapropriate as we all want the best for SF, regardless of color
Leerossh 11/26/2003
Matt is a practical Green. He works within the system as shown by his work as a public defender and now President of the Board of Supervisors. Matt attended Columbia University and Stanford Law School. This is a solid guy. As Mayor, I believe Matt will strive to work with all San Franciscans without seriously compromising his political ideals.

I usually never get involved in politics because none of the candidates ever inspire me. In this case, both candidates are young, will use the position as Mayor of San Francisco as a political stepping stone, and likely move on the larger political arena. However, when I think of the men and women working that arena, it is so discouraging- they all seem the same. They certainly cannot relate to my ambitions, and generally lack any ability to relate to the younger demographics. I am a young educated woman, who is working and putting herself through law school. I feel like Gaivn is like every other politician out there - miles away from me. Matt is the first candidate I have ever felt relates to me and me goals and concerns as a up-and-coming citizen who feels the need for reduced resources consumption. He does not separate himself from the lower and middle classes. With Arnold and Bush at the helm, we need that kind of diversity in our government for democracy to be effective. The lone voice in the wilderness......Even his opponents concede that Matt is not your typical candidate, and I am confident that he would be a breath of fresh air in higher politics. Gavin just seems like all the others- so much privilege handed to him, of which he has failed to take advantage. If my father was a prominent justice, I wouldn't go to Sanata Clara University, open up some wine shops and restaurants on my family's money, take a job that Willie Brown gave to me, buy a house in the Marina, and then claim to relate to the average San Franciscan, and homeless San Franciscan. Gavin has done nothing to build up his life beyond what was already provided for him.
Pwr2ThePeople 11/25/2003
Gruesome has made so many promises to so many people that he HAS to break several of them! Look at how he already back pedaled on Alioto's role. Matt will not say anything to anybody to get elected. He will act in good faith with the WHOLE of San Francisco in mind. What promise can you believe from Gruesome? I am a Democrat turned GREEN! GO GONZALEZ!!
DebbieJadeBell a 11/25/2003
We need an ethical, honest, bright mayor to not do business as usual and to stop the cronyism, that currently exits.
nate miller 11/25/2003
Gonzalez rules!
SkylarScott 11/23/2003
What a mess this guy is. He's the supervisor for my district. I have called his office at least 6 times in the past year with questions about my neighborhood. There is usually someone who sounds like they are about twelve years answering the phone. She says 'Yeah man' - Matt or someone from the office will get back to you on that. Guess how many times I have gotten a callback. Nill. Ok Matt, we gonna eliminate payroll tax, house all the homeless, and complete the bike plan. The problems of this City are far more complicated than know. Ever run a business in this city?? San Francisco is in big trouble if this guy is elected. Hey Matt, ever handle any of your own money?? Love, Sky ps Get some help with your hair 'Man'
nodemagogue 11/23/2003
He's not Gavin Newsom. Nuff said.

Matt Gonzalez is just what San Francisco needs right now. After four years of Brown and his cronies, we need someone who cares about the people of San Francisco. Just the fact that he worked as a public defender for ten years, makes me feel that he cares for the downtrodden. He could have made a lot more money being a defense lawyer, but he genuinely cares about bringing some much needed changes to this great city. He is young and enthusiastic and his heart is in the right place. We need a Green Party candidate to show the country that we are the trend setter for the future.
buckyweezy 11/20/2003
usually, voting for a politician is a choice between the lesser of two evils. in this case, the choice is clear, because newsom cuts out the guesswork for you. matt has integrity (take note, gavin, it can't be bought), and inspires people. i wholeheartedly support him and his platform. despite the constant murmur of matt as an idealist, he has proven he has plenty of pragmatticism to solve san francisco's ills. by the way (all you non-believers), he balanced the 350$ million dollar city deficit as board president. do you think newsom could do the same?
Jeremy Good 11/19/2003
To the other user who likes Matt on issues other than homelessness, I say this: Gavin Newsom's excellent initiatives regarding homelessness have already passed. What more could Newsom do about homelessness if he became mayor? Matt Gonzalez is a fiscal conservative who can successfully shepherd San Francisco through a difficult national, economic and budgetary crisis if that circumstance should continue. Matt would do more as mayor to combat homelessness by ensuring that affordable housing, sustainable economic development and a living wage are high priorities. He would also be more likely to devote needed resources towards preventive medicine, treatment for drug addicts and care for the mentally ill -- three other primary causes of homelessness. (Besides the escalating cost of living driving marginalized poor and needy people out of their houses and into the streets.) Meanwhile, Gavin Newsom is using absurdly, hyperbolic, negative rhetoric on this issue, accusing Matt Gonzalez of doing nothing to change a system in which 'we are literally killing fellow human beings' by tolerating panhandling and giving cash to the homeless. 'For Gonzalez to defend that is unconscionable,' Newsom said. (San Francisco Chronicle, November 18th). Do you really think more homeless will die, vandalize neighborhoods and terrorize pedestrians under Gonzalez? Please re-think this. I say let Matt Gonzalez lead as Mayor and Newsom continue his important work on the Board of Supervisors. Matt Gonzalez may not be the most effective communicator or the most conciliatory leader, but even the great Willie Brown has praised Matt Gonzalez as improving his social skills over the past few years. Matt's election to President of the Board of Supervisors is proof of his ability to unify diverse thinkers. I would like to see Gonzalez become less anti-establishment, and use less invective, reaching out more to potential leaders in business and minority communities. But he also appears to be the more principled, authentic, hard-working leader in this race. Please give him this historic opportunity to follow through on his bold, pacesetting, new initiatives like starting a municipal bank, dividing schools into smaller units and fostering essential, new, renewable energy programs. All of San Francisco will prosper from such initiatives and become a safer, more secure and family-oriented place.

Go Matt Go! Defeat the Machine
LDupry 11/17/2003
Matt is definitely the right person for the job. He is smart and honest, and he truly cares for all the people that live in San Francisco, not just for big business, like Gavin. We don't need another slicked down politician for mayor. Let's try something new. Let's try a man who stands by his principles and not one willing to sell the city to the highest bidder. Let's try a mayor willing to really be the voice of the people and not one who speaks in patronizing tones. We all need to rally behind the one person willing to rally behind us. His name is Matt Gonzalez!
golfmadman 11/17/2003
Please. He is a hypocrit. He would be the worst thing for SF's economy. The only legislation that Gonzalez has passed in 3.5 years include: Changing the title of DOG OWNER to Pet Guardian and voting to raise his salary 3 times! Think about it. He wants to destroy the middle class. The working people. While at the same time making $$!
Jake5000 11/15/2003
The most Honest man for the job: not to mention extremely well educated and hard working. He's won my vote on Dec 9th!
shaynaleia 11/15/2003
Matt Gonzalez is the real thing. He cares about our city. He truly is not your typical politician.
liamws 11/13/2003
A true progressive. He cares about seniors and the disabled; he also cares about neighborhoods and the viability of S.F. as an affordable, liveable city.
bombette 11/13/2003
Go Matt!
Revmeup 11/11/2003
MG only represents the best interest of the Green party and not the best interests of SF voters. This could be said about most of the members of the Board of Supervisors. MG's platform has little to no substance. On a recent interview on KGO he said he would GREEN all businesses HUH ? When asked about his anti-business, ant-automoble postion - he couldn't answer, other than say well, there a lot of people in the city. MG is exactly what's wrong with San Francisco. All ieals and no action. Sorry , Matt this isn't your fathers San Francisco - the sixties are over - you missed it. People who are supporing MG are not seeing the big picture. The City needs to grow - we need more businesses, and more businesses, more tourists. We need make SF the destination of choice. To turn off tourists, businesses is suicide. California is aready a joke with Arnie - lets not make SF the next joke. Headline SAN FRANCISO VOTES GREEN PARTY WANNABE BEATNICK AS MAYOR. ALL BUSINESSES WILL BE REQUIRED TO HOLD MANDATORY POETRY TIME.
lovealicious 11/10/2003
It's time we let someone who really represents the people that populate this city run this city!
Jmc2 11/10/2003
I would actually give Matt a 4.5. I think his positions AND intentions are truly progressive. I do agree that does he does not always have the ability to communicate and glad-hand like the others, but I don't know that it's a bad thing that he's not a political machine. He's getting better though at articulating his message and reaching out.
Drummond 11/10/2003
Okay, the guy doesn't have a chance. But I'm happy to see somebody make it into the runoff that might ruffle Newsom's feathers in a debate. About time progressives started generating some aggressive, creative leadership. A few major missteps however, like the Coleman thing. He can't afford mistakes like that.
TerryTerrific 10/26/2003
Matt is the best candidate for Mayor. His stance on minimum wage, business tax, providing housing to homelessness, protection of light industry zones and working with a grassroots coalition. Matt is sincere, hardworking and articulate with a warrior heart.
vitarai 10/22/2003
While I really like some of his ideas and policy positions, this guy has no ability to actually interact with people. Principle is great, but the mark of a truly gifted politician is learning how to compromise so all that is possible isn't lost due to obstinancy.
asia828sf 10/15/2003
He will be a honest and good mayor! Exactly what we San Franciscans need :)
xandysf 10/15/2003
Is there a negative star rating? This guy cannot even have intelligent discourse. He doesn't have a clue. I HAVE sat down with him personally and attempted to communicate about issues. He cannot do this. And comes across as limited.
magellan 10/15/2003
I really want to like Matt Gonzalez. He hangs out in the neighborhoods and places that I live and frequent. He's smart and driven. He has some principles that he will not compromise. He appreciates - even embodies - all the qualities that make San Francisco the most amazing city in the world. Policy wise, I am encouraged by his desire to eliminate the business payroll tax, and his emphasis on the jobs. His programs for protecting the environment seem practical. He has proven himself as a master of budgeting and an outstanding administrator. My problem is this - the biggest complaint that I have with the city I live is our tolerance for unacceptable behavior from the city's homeless and drug addicted. It is unacceptable for people to take a crap on my doorstep. It is unacceptable for you to scream at and threaten my wife when she "only" gives you fifty cents. It is unacceptable to smoke your crack and leave your needles with impunity 80 yards from the mission police station. Gavin Newsome claims to get this - Matt Gonzalez, maybe in an effort to distance himself from Gavin, doesn't. I hate to be a single issue voter, i hate to support a candidate who has nothing in common with me, but this is a big deal.... Matt, are you out there?
Galomorro 09/30/2003
I like this guy second to Jim Reid, I think he's quite in tune with ordinary folks. I've been reading about him lately and definitely approve of his ideas and suggestions for making San Francisco a better city for everyone.
