EGO, EGO EGO. A very good writer but he thinks he is 1) an authority on everything 2) smarter than everyone else.

he is bigoted, hates women, has a gambling problem, nd strays from sorts in almost an akward way like your drunk uncle telling a story that no one cares about. if you want a real sports guy, go to http://www.sportsguynorth.blogspot.com

His infactuation with a depleting city distorts every shrewed comment he publishes. This guy would be a peasant in China, a opium smuggler in the Middle East. He should be thankful for America's toleration of such crassness.
ellisbell 01/30/2006
I know that he could never be considered "high literature", but any author who can make me laugh out loud in the middle of a New York subway car can't be bad. If you're looking for deep analysis or ponderous philosophical discussions concerning sports, look elsewhere. Simmons covers the stuff you know you discuss with your buddies whether you would openly admit it or not.
psu2717 01/14/2006
Simmons is pure genius. I like the fact that he loves his Boston teams so much; it's what loving sports is all about. I look forward to each and every hilarious and insightful column. No other sports writer like him.

Funny guy, indeed 'Bostoncentric," but amusing and fairly original.
tomislav 12/12/2005
The funniest columnist in the sports writing world...by far.
bearsownu05 11/23/2005
Simmons is a sports god. Best thing to happen to ESPN since Kilborne uttered the magic words JUMANJI.
Danny Hudson 11/04/2005
This guy is a tremendous NERD. What is his daughter going to do when, as an 8th grader, she has to explain to her friends that her dad is nicknamed "The Sports Guy"? His writing used to be ok, but you can tell he's straining to keep up his style when it's clearly awkward as he is in his mid-30s.
chupacabrahurd 10/19/2005
I cannot believe Bill Simmons is even considered a sports writer. I've seen more in-depth sports analysis and commentary from a six year old. There's nothing like reading entire "sports" articles about a manager's hair, a team's uniform, or Simmons' constant whining about the Red Sox. I didn't think Red Sox fans like Simmons could still be such cry-babies after finally winning a World Series, but somehow they manage. Do they add estrogen to the water in Boston? I thought Yankee fans were loud and annoying, but "sports fans" like Simmons can even make them look tolerable.
bartman 10/13/2005
Awesome! The best. Leaves us wanting more.
Red Sox Suck 09/28/2005
Simmons is fantastic at what he does. I don't care if he doesn't write about the NFL like Peter King if you want that info MMQB is on SI. Simmons writes from the viewpoint that I like,a fan of his teams and loyal to a fault. I hate the Sox but I still read him because he brings wit to the table. Also his gambling references are fantastic. Also his writing during the NBA season is excellent and I think his knowledge of the golden age of the NBA is fantastic when the NBA was a team game. I know this much I check his site multiple times a day looking for new material and as long as he is writing I will be reading it.
CJ in Boston 09/10/2005
Is still laugh-out-loud funny when he puts the effort in, but falls too easily into tired pop-culture references, and his ego has swollen since his days as an internet phenomenon in Boston. If you remember his Digital Cities days, you remember Simmons at his best. Personally, I prefer Boston Globe desk guy Chad Finn's touchingallthebases.blogspot.com to anything Simmons writes nowadays.
Nate8uc 09/02/2005
Has made me laugh out loud at work more times than any other columns that I read combined. He has the ability to correlate two completely different and ridiculous things, yet the combination is hilarious. I think that he works best in small doses, which is why I love either his diaries or his ramblings columns. I got hooked this year on his NBA Finals Diary and his recent Ramblings column made me laugh as hard as ever. Its not easy to be a sportswriter, but I'd have to imagine that his job is much harder, in the sense that he not only has to write about sports, but make it funny, and also tie it into the pop culture of today and the past.
NoBSHere 08/08/2005
Simmons is an entertaining comedic sports fan columnist. He is not Peter Gammons nor Peter King nor Len Pasquarelli and has no pretentions of being such. I honestly believe that he currently has too much on his plate currently (book, new baby, far more columns per week than previous) and that has diluted his column somewhat. If anyone thinks it is easy, try to write one humorous paragraph a day and see how far you get. With respect to Jacksonville, no offense to any local citizens but he is 100% correct. The city was woefully underprepared for the event and it showed. I agree with Simmons idea that the Superbowl should be rotated amongst four locations capable of handling the tens of thousands of fans, journalists, groupies, etc. Cold weather teams don't have a chance of hosting anyways so a traditional rotation doesn't work.

I dont see how you could hate this guy. He's the funniest columnist I've ever read, and reading an article of his is like having a conversation with one of your best friends. Thinks so much like me it's scary. As far as him being biased towards Boston area teams, I think that makes him more likeable in the sense that I would be the same way with my hometown teams, and so would most all of his readers. I think the completely unbiased view is good for game announcers, not columnists. Also, his pop culture and movie references add a nice variety to his style.
lego7 05/10/2005
I used to like this guy but he has gotten so stale. Every single column references one of three things: Hoosiers, Karate Kid, or Larry Bird. Nearly every column uses the word pantheon and somehow ties-in The Shawshank Redemption. I can't wait for this whole pop culture thing to be over. He once wrote a column about how he misses the days when poker wasn't so popular, well I miss the days when I was not being blitzed over and over again by memories of the rubicks cube and jerking off to cinemax. I think a job at VH1 is in the cards for Simmons.****Update...I just saw this dork on VH1***
yankzrule235 04/19/2005
the next rick reilly (once he gets rid of the little bit of frat boy left in him, nothing wrong with that though. his stuff is really funny) he will be a great 1.
Corporal34 03/25/2005
A good writer; has made me laugh out loud on numerous occasions. But he talks about Boston sports WAY too much. Five full articles on the Celtics this season, and none on the Suns, Sonics, or even the Heat. If he wants to be a great writer, he should not always regress to his hometown teams for an easy article. With most sports writers, through their work you have no idea where they come from, or in the case of athlete writers (Steve Kerr, Cris Carter), where they played. And his pop-culture references are fine in small doses.
irishgit 03/02/2005
A long way down from the great sports writers of all time, but still eminently readable. His work during the baseball playoffs showed the profound personal love he has for the game and his favourite team. And that, after all, is what most of us sports fans are really about.
magellan 03/02/2005
**wow** awesome article on 'Toine today. As good an effort from Simmons that I've seen since the Shaq revenge factor article. And to all you folks who are bashing him because he didn't like Jacksonville.... get a life. ** The Sports Guy writes the way one of your sports obsessed buddies would - if your buddy was smart and could write. His columns are like a print version of the funniest, off the wall observations that could only be made with your best friends, over beers somewhere. Like noting that Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson left far more of an imprint on my generation than real life Bo. Or that there are two kinds of people in the world: those that liked Field of Dreams, and those that don't have a heart. Or the cliche that is upside. Unless you have read him, it's kind of hard to describe. Closest thing to a cult sports writer that I have ever seen. Check him out on ESPN.com Page 2.
jonnysero1987 02/28/2005
sports guy is awesome. that is the bottom line. Like someone else said, he tells it with no BS whatsover. Sports guy and Archreport.com are hands down the two best sources for sports opinion, from a real fans perspective.

I, like a previous poster to this topic, used to like Simmons' writing. However, I have soured on his writing recently. It could be for a number of reasons. 1. As an NFL and MLB fan, I used to sympathize with his plight, cheering for teams that perpetually come up short. Fortunately for him and unfortunately for me, the Pats and Sox are world champs, while my Tigers and Lions are anything but tearing up their respective leagues. 2. As he has gained popularity, he seems to have grown in arrogance. He is more critical of basically everyone from other sports writers to coaches to pop culture figures. Part of his appeal to me was that he was just an average fan. I don't consider him to have the breadth of knowledge that an established sports writer has, nor do I consider him to be qualified to make coaching decisions. I guess making fun of celebrities can be funny, but to me it has gotten stale. Also, though I know that Simmons kept saying that he was, calling it like he saw it. The Jacksonville bashing in the Super Bowl completely rubbed me the wrong way. 3. I loved reading his columns as an undergraduate, but now the pop culture references that I used to find funny seem stale and forced. Maybe my sense of humor has changed. Through his writing, Simmons shows himself to be a college kid who has never grown up. This is probably why I have lost interest in his writing while I continue to enjoy writers like: Peter Gammons, Rob Neyer, and Mitch Albom. I will admit that I continue to read his columns on occasion, but it's more of a curiosity now. What completely asinine comment will Simmons make this week? I rated him a 2 because I believe that his writing once had merit, although I am tempted to give his writing a 1 to help lower the aggregate score, but I will remain honest. He deserves a 2.

Bill Simmons is the biggest cry-baby I have ever had the displeasure of reading about. He is the male version of Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. He truly believes that the entire purpose of the Superbowl is to please HIM! I was in Jacksonville all week. They did a fine job and will do so again one day - regardless of what Bill Simmons and Tony Kornheiser think. The FANS LOVED it in Jax: 'nuff said.

No one cares what he thinks about his accomidations at the Super Bowl, write about sports! Be thankful you have a job where they actually invite you to these functions. With your uninteresting whining, I bet you don't have many friends.
DamnYankees 01/26/2005
The most engaging sports writer there is. Just a fan, like the rest of us, who is the best at putting on paper what it feels like to be a fan.
CUBuffs155 01/23/2005
Funny, smart, knows what's happening in the world more than just sports. Plus, the passion he shows for all sports is unequaled in this era of experts that only show up for a single sport season each year.
parkerman9 01/22/2005
I had to check his stuff out after being the only non-Pats fan in a fantasy league. Now it makes sense - he's just a local (Boston) guy with numerous stabs at comedy but only random hits! I can appreciate the passion but for a columnist I would expect more perspective - especially this NFL season. Then again, it is ESPN he's writing for . . . at least finally I know where all these dorks from New England are stealing their material from - one of their own. 'Homerism' at its best/worst - I can't tell. This is from a loyal Philly guy with passion and true perspective. The Sports Guy is trying too hard - he should devote his energy to investing, earning or something that will make the world a better place.
screbel86 01/07/2005
He knows sports and pop culture and has an ability to mesh them together. He's the Dave Barry of sports writing. However I hate the Pats (Go Panthers!!), and I'm tired of the BoSox. And just once I want him to admit that Brady is not the next Montana, but simply a less-talented version of Favre.
glove 01/05/2005
I think he has gotten a little bit of a bigger head that his work has afforded him. But he floors me quite often with something that I thought but never said out loud. Next to Peter Gammons he is the best thing going on ESPN.
thefrugalgourm et 12/10/2004
he is one of the guys who couldn't play any sports very well, and is enough of a latent homosexual to obsess with sports to the point that it becomes his personality...was probably the towel boy for his high school teams...the type of person that actual atheletes make fun of...just a complete dork... typical red sox fan

Bill Simmons is by far the best sports columnist I have ever read. His humor and knowledge of all sports makes him a must read. If you have any appreciation of comedy and a true knowledge of sports, he is the best in the business.
JackintheIce 11/07/2004
He's decent but appeared to suffer an aneurysm while writing his column about 61* which caused me to poop all over myself
CanadaSucks 11/04/2004
Yes, Bill Simmons talks too much about Boston. ..but he is too damn funny and literate. He can talk about sports, porn, 80's pop culture references, and his wife and make it all come together. He is a rare sportswriter that actually thinks for himself.
niko697 11/04/2004
The Sports Guy, He is one of the worst sports writers I had ever read, funny I don't think so. I'm tried of people like Bill who only talks about Boston. I hope this guy get fired from ESPN or better yet maybe he will just go away! Why would ESPN hire this guy, is he one of those rejects from one of those reality shows. Go Back to Boston and write there because clearly it shows you can't write on national level.
tvjunkie43 08/07/2004
Can be funny and insightful but also incredibly boring using the same references over and over and over and over. Liked him more before he started reading his own press clippings. Maybe moving to LA does that to you?
happyian 07/19/2004
Not so much a sportswriter as the friend you wished you had. A genious at being a guy.

Brute Squad 06/01/2004
Best combination of humor and sports knowledge.
DrBassman 04/28/2004
This guy deserves all the respect and praise we can muster. Perhaps the only member of the entire media who writes without a shred of BS. His voice is our voice. He writes from the intelligent fan's perspective without fancying up his columns to make himself sound smart. Any reader who follows Bill regularly can't help like feeling like they know him, because it always feels like he's talking straight to you. His thoughts on not only sports but life in general are always very frank and very real, literally like you're having a conversation with him. He's my favorite writer of any kind.
Peter Johnson 03/25/2004
Getting a little stale, but still the best sports humour guy around.
mcaprio 03/11/2004
Simply put he is the best sport writter in the nation. I wish he had the time to write daily columns instead of the once a weekly if we are lucky ones.
