I've just never seen the big deal, and I've seen the original. It's just a portrait of a not particularly interesing woman against a dark and mountainous backdrop. Undoubtedly highly proficient technically, it is, to my eye, an unemotional and unmoving piece of art.

What makes the Mona Lisa so interesting isn't the art itself but the mystery behind it...is it a self portrait? Do the eyes really follow you?. There is a ton of security around this painting to "keep her safe" but Da Vinci is intriguing either way...he was ahead of his time. The Mona Lisa was just one of his elements.

In my own opinion - the most famous painting ever(maybe for exeption of The Last Supper). I never found Mona Lisa(De Jaconde)very attractive, not even remotly, what I always liked about this painting is how it's drawn. Mona Lisa looks pretty much alive. I like the mystery behind Mona Lisa's smile. I was always drawn to unknown and Mona Lisa is one of the wonders I don't mind figuring out. Leonardo's work is a masterpiece, he was a genius. Other than that, I guess we will never know the truth about all the hupla that surrands this great painting.

Hey Ridge, while I can agree on you that it takes a long time studying the Mona Lisa to appreciate it fully, I am not so sure on who is actually in the painting. There are like four or five theories running around right now, and I'm not sure if anyone really knows. If you wanna pass me info in private on this matter, feel free. Your assertion piqued my curiousity a bit. :) As for the painting, it's a masterwork from one of the best of his generation. That little sly smile always makes me crack one while wondering what that woman's thinking (a secret, perhaps).

Said to be a self-portrait of da Vinci. When archivists superimposed other self portraits of him onto the Mona Lisa, the similarities were undeniable...Hence, the mysterious smile.

One of the all-time classics, painted by maybe the most intelligent human who's ever lived.
