"EastEnders" is a U.K. soap opera that premiered on the BBC in 1985. Set in London's East End, "EastEnders" revolves around the lives of a number of predominantly working-class families. "EastEnders" incorporates British humor, "multi-racial, larger-than-life characters" and a focus on the everyday life of "ordinary people." (Add picture)

Let me add my two-cents worth.. EastEnders is now five yrs. behind the UK, however, I can't stand the thought of it being taken off PBS here in MD. When I go back home to the UK, I've no idea what it's about any more. BUT -- I've tried everything I know to be able to at least watch it somehow. The contract is not being renewed after the end of this year because it's simply not profitable any more, Echo Star dish network is taking it over. Also seems "The Sun" newspaper in the UK donated about $29,000 to the Long Island, NY PBS station in an attempt to keep it on the air. Also, sign up for it to stay on air by signing in to ThePetitionSite.com (I think) - not many names on the list I'm afraid. Any news on how it can still be obtained? Hate to see it leave...

I live in the UK and am fecked off by the way this turgid, ugly, depressing and humourless sh*te clogs up the BBC1 schedules 3 evenings a week. It's the worst programme ever made in the UK bar none. All involved in its making should hang their heads in shame.

I keep trying to watch it to see what all the fuss is about - each time i find awful acting, bizarre unrealistic storylines and the most unconvincing 'gangsters'(?) ever on tv.

what a soap - excellent storylines, excellent characters.... talking of characters, i know a lad called mikael rosen who is actually a complete co.ck. he wears clothes that make him look like a mars bar. everyone pretends to be his friend as they feel sorry for him - i mean the loser drives a volvo for christs sake. he has a tiny penis, his co.ck smeels so badly of cheese that you can smell him coming from miles away - when i smell him knocking on my door i hid behind the sofa and pretend i'm not in. i'm surprised his bird puts up with the smell, but rumour has it she has puts vanilla pods up her nostrils to compensate. another loser is james livermore - he also has a inverted pen.is - and loves nothing better than masturbating over naked pictures of andy knight.

To all you Eastenders fans, get a life, I've look at most of your ratings and they are pathetic. You have turned your back on the channel that brought you the show in the first place. BBC America is not a huge network with a lot of cash it shows a lot of good programming. For all of you to put your comments degrading the channel is totally unfair. Eastenders will probably return as most of the programming does. BBC America appears to rotate a lot of its programing. There are still a lot of good shows on the channel even though it is some what repetitive but that is the nature of small cable channels. I have taken a short look at EastEnders and got bored very quickly. Its just another British soap and like the ones over here they are all the same.

This show shouldn't even be considered in the same category of soap operas. It's nielson ratings are almost non exhistent and it isn't even good enough to be broadcast on a major national network

Soap operas are weird...really weird. Some people have like no drama in their lives, so they think they can get it from TV?! pshh. I once saw one and there was this lady that had a boyfriend and was cheating on him and he found out and was bawling his eyes out..talk about weird.

I used to be able to watch EastEnders on BBC America until it was cancelled by them. I laugh at their reasoning they wanted to bring more programs in that BBC America felt people would like. For the programs that replaced it, at least 3 of the programs are old, and they appear on the local PBS Stations. I really think BBC America dropped the ball on this one!

I'm surprised that so many Americans love this programme. I was like many of you before as I used to LOVE Eastenders and I wasn't even a fan of soap-opers I disliked them, now I just simply ignore them. The writers now have truly insulted their viewers intelligence. The fresh, crisp believeable storylines and plots that once graced our screens keeping over 10 million plus viewers in their homes have now spiraled into mawkish, unfunny pretentious situations and the characters are not believable anymore. Eastenders is so depressing I stopped watching it years ago because if you go to the East End of London you will see there are no characters like the ones they feature on Eastenders and the joke is the programme is based on the East End of London. Eastenders is full of too many stereotypical characters and the viewers ratings over here in England has severly dropped.

In the UK, this bleak, depressing and humourless crud takes up the prime 7.30 slot on BBC1 4 times a week, when something else far more edifying and entertaining could be put on in its place. The characters are either dysfunctional, bad tempered, scheming and unfaithful or retarded simpletons. The plots are pretty much all about feuds, infidelity and dirty tricks. I wouldn't invite any of these characters into my home so why do so many people like having them in theirs? Programmes like this set a bad example to kids who think that aggressive, snarling behaviour is normal. I don't write this programme off as harmless nonsense as I think it has an insidiously harmful effect on viewers.

Its the only REAL soap on tv, but only if a PBS station in the US buys the license because the BBCA team would prefer to have an all re-runs, all the time channel and won't carry EastEnders any longer. I'd love to see their overall ratings now! Bet they've dipped drastically since 9/27/03. Bernath, you're such a muppet!

Not your average soap! Well-developed characters, engaging story-lines, takes chances without resorting to silly gimmicks (no supervillains or supra-heroines)--really worth watching. Too bad it's three years behind on PBS (depending on where you are in the U.S.). BBC posts story updates online, which is a start, but I'd love to be able to SEE it as it's being aired..

I miss Eastenders on BBC America. I never failed to watch it and have been a fan since the beginning almost 20 years ago. It is the highest rate show in Britain, and has won countless awards over the years. It features characters I can relate to and issues that strike an emotional chord. The writing and acting keeps me captivated. We need this show on America Television.

To date 14000 people have signed the Saveeastenders petition. The powers that be at BBC America are just not listening to it's viewers! Almost every person is saying the same thing...Eastenders was without doubt the most popular show on BBCAmerica, that the majority of their viewers either purchased a dish or additional cable channels for the sole purpose of getting Eastenders, and a large majority of those same viewers have or will in the near future cancel BBCAmerica! We are outraged! Many of us have been loyal viewers since the series began. This is the #1 show in the U.K. and apparently also the #1 show on BBCAmerica too! We have been left with a couple of very average new shows for the season and 23 hours of repeats! Shame on you BBCAmerica. You deserve to loose all your viewers.

Original, topical, engaging, non-condescending. BBCAmerica has made a very bad calculation here: cancelling this show signals contempt for the station's most loyal viewers and a lack of interest in providing original programming. Why was viewer feedback not solicited before the decision to cancel? Does the station really believe that that they're "value-added" to the banality of cable/satellite choices when they've made a conscious choice to focus on seemingly neverending re-runs of shows that appeal only to the occasional viewer? Perhaps it's cheaper in the short run, but they've shot themselves in the foot with this decision...

BBCA should be ashamed of themselves. They promote their tired old reruns to death, yet they NEVER promoted the best of the best, the Eastenders. The online petition is almost 14,000 strong, and growing. This is blackmail at it's nastiest. They are trying to go VOD with it, which means most people will not get it. We pay $$$ for digital and satellite to receive this great show and deserve the consideration of being able to view it for what we have already spent. Shame Shame Shame, David Bernath.

Eastenders is the best soap opera on television. It is "real", no hollywood glamour here.. just real to life characters with interesting story lines.. This is one show i will NOT give up. It's sad that we 14,000 viewers have no value to the television industry and have to take things into our own hands in order to get the show we want.As long as Eastenders is still being shown in UK (and in nearly every other country in the world, other than America)I will continue to get my hands on it every week...I think the problem is that for some reason BBCA doesnt realize that attached to every dollar they want to take in is a viewer...and i'm afraid you cant treat the viewer with disdain and still expect them to hand over the money! BBCA-R.I.P

Eastenders has realistic, compelling characters of all races and sizes and ages - from babies to elders. Eastenders has fabulous, award-winning actors (they just swept the TV awards in Britain.) The story lines effectively deal with issues in society - a recent story line about spouse abuse was well-acted and informative. Other issues include drug abuse, interracial relationships, money problems, death, Alzheimers, abortion, adoption, gambling, etc. The characters do not look like models - they wear the same clothing time and again, and they represent the real world, not a fantasy place where everyone is beautiful, rich and fake. The characters become like family, and you'll look forward to visiting with them every week.

Best TV soap there is. My dad was born in the East End so I have visited the area many times over my lifetime. It's really a lot like Albert Square, people help each other, look out for each other, people are just there for each other. I found Eastenders to be a slice of home, warts and all, it depicted life like it really is, black, white, gay, straight, all getting on with each other because we're all members of the human race. People looked like real people, talked like real people. Now it's gone and I miss it, I feel like I've lost my dad all over again!

I've watched EE nearly all my life- it is a wonderful show filled with real people and real relationships. Just because it doesn't fit into the same mold as every other show on America tv does not mean it's worth cancelling and alienating thousands of viewers. Update: Kilby, EE is overrated? Not as good as Charmed? Oh yes because we all know what a *wonderful* drama Charmed is don't we?

The most popular show in the UK for nearly 20 years! Available all over the world, even in the Ukraine, but cancelled here in the US by BBC America! Is there something wrong with this picture? It's not just a SOAP! It's true to life situations we all can relate to with working-class people who don't look like they just stepped off the runway! Some how this madness must end! We deserve to spend time with our friends in Albert Square as much as the rest of the world!

This is a down to earth, real-life type situation drama. American soaps are dominated by over dressed, overly made up actors who are totally unlike the average person sitting at home watching. The cancellation by the BBCAmerica network has left a definite hole in TV programming. Thousands of American viewers can't be wrong.

EastEnders is the only show I can NOT live without. It's so exciting especially since the return of Dirty Den!!! I have been waiting for it for 14 years! Those rat bastards at BBCA cancelled it right when things were getting really good. Considering all the awards EastEnders wins, and the huuuuge fan base it has, it's BBCA's own fault if ratings weren't good. I'm one of the lucky viewers who found alternative ways to see EE here in the States. I now will increase my financial support to PBS to ensure that this quality show continues to stay on the air where I live!

Well constructed comment BigBaby, interesting reading and food for thought. I wasn't clear on what you felt about the actual topic of this forum, so I'm afraid I had to rate your comment as unhelpful. Why are we frauds? My comments are heartfelt & sincere. I'm here because I don't have a Neilsen box and want to be able to have my say about what is good on television. This is such a good show, I think American audiences would really enjoy if they were given the opportunity. It wins so many awards and is constantly the most popular show in the UK. There is a movement growing to try to get BBC America to reinstate Eastenders (it belongs on this channel). Fingers crossed. I really miss it.

EastEnders will always be must see tv for me. There is no show on the air as compelling, as exciting and as fast paced as this excellent British drama series, the number one series watched by at least half the population, four nights a week. This is a show that makes you care about the characters, cry for them when they are miserable, laugh with them and sometimes at them, and always care about what is going to happen to each and every one of them. As a citizen of the USA I wish our television networks could come up with something as good!!!

Isn't there a "10"? In 1994, our antenna was picking up some channels we ordinarily didn't get. I happened upon a show called "Eastenders" on a Canadian station. I became hooked immediately. The next year we bought our house and installed a dish, where I discovered BBC America carried newer episodes of Eastenders, and immediately added the tier to my programming. Not only could I watch more current Eastenders, my husband and I both discovered so many shows on BBC America that we enjoyed, Father Ted, Antiques Roadshow, Red Dwarf, Changing Rooms and Keeping up appearances. Now Father Ted is gone, Antiques Roadshow is gone, Red Dwarf is gone, Keeping up Appearances is almost gone, Changing Rooms is nothing but repeats over and over and over, and the biggest loss is that Eastenders is gone. I don't know if BBC America realizes what they have done to their American viewing audience or not?! It's only been a month and the Save Eastenders bunch has almost 14,000 signatures on the petition! I love the characters on the show, they are so real compared to American Soaps. I miss the show so much. The worst part is that the network seems not to care that they've done this to me! I wish I could buy the show on dvd or pay per view...anything! If you watch this show for at least a couple of episodes, you'd be hooked, also. I enjoyed the show so much that I thought about moving to England! I wish there were some way to be able to watch it again.

I discovered EastEnders on PBS in the late 1980's. The fact that it continues to hold my interest speaks for the quality of this drama. It is not a "typical soap opera". The characters are refreshingly real. You don't find ultra-thin, designer dressed divas bemoaning their fate on EE, but you do find regular people addressing the universal facets of life. EastEnders just won Britain's "Most Popular Serial Drama". It has been my "Favorite Program" for fifteen years.
