 | 93century (38) 06/11/2007 | Its not my type of Comedy movie, but i liked the story. I thought it was hilarious when Summer was complaining about the job of a band roadie after researching it on the internet.

 | AEnzhRu (4) 02/14/2007 | Although I'm not necessarily what you would call a Jack-Black-connoisseur (I've only seen a few of his films), I absolutlely loved this one. Coming from a musically-inclined family and having very diverse tastes in all types of music genres, I really got a kick out of Jack Black teaching an elementary class (as a substitute teacher) lessons in the history of music and music appreciation. Whereas most people their age (and pretty much anyone thirty years old or younger) listens to schlock like Beyonce, Kid Rock, and pretty much any other pseudo-musician who has come out in the last decade or two, Jack Black refines their musical tastes to classic rock artists such as Jimi Hendrix, The Eagles, and Led Zeppelin. He teaches his students to play guitars, drums, synthesizers and sings and finally they form a band and absolutely rock.
Jack composed some songs for this movie and they absolutely rock. The ending concert performed by the elementary-class band rocked and was cool and funny at the same time. Even Meat Loaf would be hard-pressed to come up with catchier material.
Simultaneously a funny and educational movie.

 | frogger20190 (3) 05/10/2006 | This was cute but not really a laugh riot. I expected more from Jack Black--he seemed to be holding himself back to appeal to the parents taking their kids to see this movie.

 | BubBlEbAbE1136 (0) 04/09/2004 | I thought it was good. Even though I hate bands and that kind of music it got me in that mood. I don't like Jack Black but still it was a funny movie and I am glad I saw it

 | minkey (40) 03/22/2004 | The majority of the movie took place in a classroom and Jack Black taught the students how to form a band. That's basically all you need to know.

 | CherrySoda99 (31) 03/22/2004 | It actually wasn't that bad a movie, it was actually kind of cute. The ads didn't really appeal to me , but after I watched it, I really enjoyed it.

 | irishgit (151) 03/17/2004 | Pretty tame and often pretty dull and predictable. A few funny bits. I don't regret seeing it, but I wouldn't kill myself to see it again.

 | JonTheMan (29) 03/14/2004 | Obviously since this is a mainstream family movie I was skeptical about Jack Blacks ability to be entertaining without Black swearing like a drunk sailor to communicate his disillusionment with the establishment. However, one wonders, where does disillusionment with authority (or as Black puts it the man) begin? In school of course. So therefore who better to teach a bunch of impressionable youngsters to question the hegemony of the man then Jack Black, who is keen to wildly instill a sense of rebellion as he turns his class into a fully fledged rock band. As always, Black pretty much plays himself but with a sensitive tinge when he consoles the various rock and roll acolytes when they doubt themselves. To me this is more than just a feel-good comedy with a stadium rock twist (which it's pretty good at) but it's a modern day parable about how children and adults alike have forgotten their dreams, forgotten how to have fun and forgotten even how to rebel (This is shown in how the flamboyant and wild metal bands of old which Black touts are unknown to the children and repressed by the adults). This film is cleverly analogous of how modern day rockers have forgotten the purpose of Rock and Roll (his students suggest the point of rock and roll is to score chicks or to get loaded). This film curiously embodies the true spirit of Rock better then most music videos ever could in that it shows the characters are able to once again forget their inhibitions, question authority, express themselves and ultimately stick it to the man because that, my friends, is what Rock is all about.

 | Molfan (60) 03/10/2004 | Almost a four. If you are willing to go with the plot, this is a cute movie. Jack Black needs to earn some money quick and at the same time is trying to form a new band. He pretends to be his roomate who is a substitute teacher. It turns out some of the kids he is teaching are good musicians. since he cannot teach he gets the kids to start up a band during class. at the end they end up competing in a battle of the bands. pretty unlikely movie. I read the kids really playing the instruments which is nice. A better movie than I thought it would be.

 | pikachan (0) 03/09/2004 | Pretty good movie. Jack Black is good as a low-life who pretends to be a guy so he can teach kids at a school to earn money after his bandmates kick him out of the band. He soon teaches the kids about music and it's history. Funny moments keep this from going flat.

 | Teaseress (15) 03/09/2004 | More tame than what I thought it would be and definately shows that Jack Black is getting into mainstream films after playing bit roles and having one lead in a film so far (High Fidelity and Shallow Hal) The film was very cute and as per usual Joan Cusack was brilliant. Its great seeing how the kids from the class progress and come out of their shells and seeing Jack do all his usual faces and singing. Definately worth watching.

 | ClassicTVFan47 (38) 10/18/2003 | Although not spectuacular or over-the-top, the movie was surprisingly good. For one, it had good acting from Jack Black (whom I had never seen in a movie before now) and the children. Also, Joan Cusack was great as the uptight principal. The jokes were funny, and the ending was great and upbeat. Profanity was minor, and not used, really, in a bad sense. Also, references to some bands that I enjoy (such as Yes) provoked a smile or two.

 | JorganVonStingle (1) 10/05/2003 | This was a really awesome movie, and for some reason, that really was suprising to me. I always thought Jack Black was funny, and loved all his movies, but they were always despised by critics. When I heard about this movie, I thought this sounds great, too bad the critics will hate it. I was suprised when I picked up my Entertainment Weekly and saw an A. Then I saw more A's and couldn't believe it. I said to myself, "I have to see this movie!" I did, and wow, it was one of my favorites all year. What suprised me was that it was a good family film despite its PG-13 rating. Be sure to check it out if you get the chance. You will not be disappointed.
