The modern version of this is famous as the Nigerian General e-mail scam. Essentially this is a promise of huge rewards for the mark fronting some money to aid a distressed person (originally a prisoner held unjustly in a Spanish jail) with subsequent tappings of the gullible pigeon until they are broke or figure out that they`ve been fleeced.
