Randall vs. Chavez 1 (1994) 4

A significant fight in that Frankie Randall broke Julio Cesar Chavez' amazing winning streak and halted his attempt to reach 100-0. A lofty goal for most fighters but at his peak Chavez was unlike any other fighter fighting at that time. History will record him as one of the best of any era.Three fights prior to his fight with Randall, Chavez fought to a controversial draw with Pernall Whitaker. Most observers thought Whitaker did more than enough to win. Most were outraged. That fight was the beginning of the end for Chavez in that it exposed him as human. He was not infallibale.

Frankie Randall came into this fight with that in his mind and more importatly, so did Chavez. Randall out fought Chavez in several rounds, knocking Chavez down for the first time in his career. At times, as in the Whitaker fight,  Chavez seemed distracted and confused. The chink in Chavez' armor was growing. Randall won a 12 round split decision and handed Chavez the first lost of his amazing career.

Four months later they fought a rematch. If the fight with Whitaker and the first fight with Randall exposed a chink in Chavez armor than the rematch exposed a chink in his character. There was an obviously accidental headbutt between both fighters. It was ruled an accidental headbutt, yet referee Mills Lane, normally on top of things and one of the best referees in the business, inexplicably took a point from Randall. Even more inexplicably, Chavez was asked what he wanted to do. He said he was unable to continue due to the cut. The points were tallied up and Chavez was given a technical decision. Randall deserved better. They would fight ten years later, both well passed their primes. Chavez won a 10 round decision. No controversy.

Like most fighters, especially the great ones, they can't see the end. They make excuses, find reasons for the losses, anything but the truth. The same unwillingness to quit, the quality that takes a fighter to the top, works against him at the end of his career. A sad fact.
