A great horse. I wish Buddy would have put a "real" jock on him through the T.C. and he'd have won the Belmont.

The only horse in my lifetime that may have been able to give a hard time to Secretariat. His campaign as a 4 year old is probably the best ever. His trainer, Bud Delp, said he thought the Bid was the best horse ever to look through a bridle. Apart from the 70's version of Big Red, he may have been right. Think about it...he ran a mile and a quarter in 1:58! Sheesh...

The Bid and Afleet Alex should be triple crown winners. Several horses have two legs of the crown - fantastic horses - Alysheba, Bold Forbes, Smarty Jones, Silver Charm, Etc. Bid and Alex are greater, on triple crown level. These Two belong in the club. It really bothers me when horses are referred to as "it". For example I read a little item on I think it was Skip Away - Who was/is very well known. The writer described "Skip Away winning IT'S race!' I don't care about proper diction or whatever excuse the might be given for this, Skip Away is a HE!!How could someone be so disrespectful of a courageous, talented and marvelous champion???!!! Does anyone else agree???

A strong contender for the greatest Racehorse ever on the flat.Had a safetey pin not entrenched his foot in the morning workout before the Belmont Stakes(He was beaten into 3rd palce being affected by the injury) he would surely have joined the roll of honour of Triple Crown winners. The grey Tornado would simply blaze the racetrack winning in any sort of going,in every sort of manner .(From winning setting the pace to winning coming of the pace),carrying phenomenal handicaps and setting track and World records. He had phenomenal winning streaks of 10 wins and 12 wins and his only weakness was that he never won over a distance of 10 furlongs. The major blemish in his career was his Belmont Stakes defeat and his defeat at the hands of 1978 Triple Crown winner in the 1979 Jockey Club Cup when not fully prepared. In an entire Career,as a 2,3 and 4 year old no racehorse has achieved what the Bid did and he would certainly rank among the top dozen flat racehorses ever.

Didn't get a fair shake. He was great on the track and continued to be under rated by the media. He was also successful in the breeding shed. I personally would put his line in my barn!

He was a handsome grey powerhouse who almost made it in the Triple Crown. The Bid is one of my personal favorites.

If there are any tragic horses, I would say Spectacular Bid was one of them. He was the greatest horse not to achieve the Triple Crown. Nevertheless, he was a great racehorse who raced against the likes of Affirmed, Alydar, and Seattle Slew. He was also dominant in most races. In my opinion, the Bid deserves the lofty rank he now occupies amongst great horses.
