ItemImageBlackjack is a card game in which each player attempts to score 21 without busting (exceeding 21). Face cards are worth 10 and aces are worth 1 or 11, depending on the choice of the player. In casino Blackjack, the dealer plays according to predetermined rules - for example, the dealer must take a hit (a card) at 16 or below, and must stay at 17 or above - regardless of what the other players have showing.

It's easy to figure out how to get to 21, and this is one of the best games for casino rookies. But play with your friends if you don't know the unspoken rules - if you hit on that soft 16 with complete disregard to the stranger next to you, you'll hear some rude remarks.

Sucker game. You are always at a disadvantage since you must play before the house.

I've played Blackjack in five different continents. I've played in Macau where Hong Kong millionaires were placing 10,000 dollar bets on my spot because I was so hot (you can do that in Macau). And I've played in Djibouti, where the dealer drops the card behind the table, reaches down, and pulls up an Ace for 21(I assumed he had even more aces under there and I literally ran out of that casino). And of course, there was Panama, where a patron didn't like the fact I hit on 12 against the dealer's 2 (the correct play), busted, and allowed the dealer to kill the table; He cursed me out in Spanish (and looked like he was reaching for a knife). I've won so much money in a night that I was able to buy a $2,000 ring for my dad. And I've gotten killed so bad, I had to sleep in my car because I didn't even have money to get a motel. But blackjck is losing it's luster. First off, Texas Hold 'em is a more challinging (and profitable game). Second, the casinos have made it impossible to win with 8-deck shoes and an automatic shuffler that eliminates any possiblity of card-counting (or the players advantage of having the end of the show heavy in high-cards). I played blackjack at a reservation last week, lost 12 straight hands, and vowed never to play again (but I know I will -- That's gambling for you).

It's a fun game but gets boring after a while. I'd rather be playing hold 'em.

What makes Blackjack more beatable than other casino games is that it has a history. If you see a card goes by, it's gone. Whether you're playing with a four deck shoe, or a six deck shoe, it doesn't matter. Each card that passes will slightly tilt the odds - either against the dealer, or for the dealer. Card counting in Blackjack can be as simple of keeping track of how many low cards pass by versus high cards. The more high cards that are left in the deck, the better for the player, as there is a bigger likelihood that the dealer will bust. That being said, the advantage you can gain is only a couple of points - and to really take advantage of those points, you need a huge bankroll and the balls not to get rattled losing large amounts of money even when the odds are in your favor.

Blackjack and video poker are the only games you can win at...and it's not true you can't count a six deck shoe.. not every card certainly, but it's silly to keep track of 6s vs. 7s or mundane things like that anyway.

Learn some basic strategies. Most casinos now use a four to six deck shoe, and no one outside an idiot savant can count a six deck shoe. However, there are a few basic scan counts that can help your play immensely.
