I watched it once in 1989 and just last month. All I can say is wow: exquisitely and movingly filmed. It takes a while to get into the plot, but when it moves, it moves, building up to a stirring climax in the last twenty minutes. It's chilling, yet also poignant in its story of the murdered boy. You feel for George C. Scott's character, particularly his search for the truth and his desire to do justice. The dropping of clues is slow and subtle--the door opening, the banging, the bouncing ball, the shattered window, the discovery of the walled up room and the attic (with a peek at that wheelchair). Great use of music too--lovely and haunting. But the best part are the visuals: whether it's Trish van Devere's wardrobe (so classic and elegant) or that magnificent, mysterious mansion from different angles.

This didn't do a lot for me. It wasn't scary or very interesting. Just average. 2 and a half stars

Beautifully made ghost story--truly one of the best in the genre. Pray they don't remake it.

well acted, and horrifying.......a real "ghost" story and one of the few with a real plot and an Academy Award winning actor.
