Over four years after the event, former Cubs left fielder Moises Alou stated that he had no chance of catching the ball regardless of what Bartman did. He claims that his temper tantrum at the time was frustration with himself.
Nice going, Moises. You only let the poor bastard twist in the wind for four seasons, and get pilloried all over Chicago and the internet.
In any event, this was unimportant. The Cubs collapse after this had a whole lot do with their crappy play than with the actions of a single fan.

Come on. Even if Alou HAD made the damn catch, the Cubs still had to get what--5 more outs? Blame on them for making them lose their focus....

The single most hilarious moment in sports history.
jackassbartman 06/04/2007
Given I would have done almost the same thing but that ruined the momentum of the game for the fans at wrigley and the team. This sparked the error at short. (WAIT TO GO GONZO) All in all this guys interferenced ruined the momentum of the series.
disgust4PCness 11/07/2006
As a Cub fan, easily the worst sports memory that I have in my life. Although, I don't blame Bartman...he is just an easy scapegoat for Cub fans. The team on the field did plenty on their own to turn a 3 games to 1 lead, headed to the World Series...into a monumental collapse.

So what?

Only a loser could blame a fan involved in a single incident for the fortunes of a professional franchise. The players, on the field, and the manager, lost this game and allowed themselves to collapse and look for a scapegoat, not realizing that by blaming the fan, they looked even worse than the incredible choke they were guilty of on the field. The fans made it worse by allowing the players to look away from the mirror. A part of the lesson of athletic competition is overcoming adversity, staying focused and deserving to win the game. What happened to Bartman after the game is a blight on the Cubs' organization and their fans. They showed America what real losers look like.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! I'm a St. Louis Cardinals fan if you didn't figure it out already. Still makes me smile.

There were so many pathetic pitches and plays after his misshap that it's idiotic to blame the guy for the whole inning.

Changed Cubs baseball forever. What this asshole did should not be forgoten.

I am a DIE HARD Cub fan and have been as long as I can remember. I feel that the Cubs lost composure after that play. Steve Bartman didnt do anything that any other fan at a ball game would do and thats to get a baseball. He has gone through hell since that game. Give the guy a break. He didnt make the error at shortstop, or give up the hits over the next 10 innings ( 9th inning and game 7). I love being a Cub fan and one day before I die they will get to the World Series and win it all.
Jimbo120 08/07/2005
It was a moment that those who saw it won't forget it. But three reasons why I never blamed Bartman for that play is this. 1.It took the Cub pitchers to allow 8 runs, not Bartman. 2.IF you look at a picture of the play, many fans reacted to catching that ball too. 3. The Cubs lost the NLCS in Game 7, not Game 6.

Not the greatest moment in baseball, but a memorable one. I was rooting for the Cubs that year. I'm not a Cubs fan, per se, but I feel sorry for them and I despise the Marlins (they sold World Series tickets at $5.00 and still couldn't pack the house) as a team that doesn't deserve to exist, let alone win 2 World Series. It was all set, Cubs up by 2, Prior cruising, then the 1-out walk, then the foul ball which I am not 100% convinced that Moises Alou had a play on. But when the dude who looks like that Idiot Jared from Subway deflects the ball, the rage emanating from Alou was a tell-tale sign that Alou knew the Cubs were doomes. We all know what happened after that. I honestly believe that 10,000,000,000 years from now, the Sun will turn to a big snow ball and the Cubs still will not have been to another World Series since 1945.
allstardude1 04/18/2005
The Cubs will never end their streak anyway. Do you think even if they won that series, they would've beat the Red Sox? They would have lost to the Sox anyway so it doesn't really matter. It was his instinct. He saw it coming and caught it. Nothing is wrong with listening to your instincts.
Skizero 03/08/2005
hardly memorable. other than those wandering Lake Michigan, most didn't even care that the CUBS were in the NLCS in 2003.

That moment is overrated and shouldn't even be on this list.
Alexg681 02/02/2005
This wasn't great at all, that poor guy got abused for it, the Cubs have themselves to blame for blowing that series.

This event should not even be part of this list. If anything, why isn't Nolan Ryan's 5000th strikout in this list? Why isn't Barry Bonds's 73 homerun season considered a significant event? Why isn't Babe Ruth's alleged called shot during the 1932 Yankees vs. Cubs series not considered a memorable event? In any case, Steve Bartman was an unfortunate fan who was unfairly maligned by Cubs fans who witnessed what amounted to a nervous breakdown by their team. True, he interferred with the foul ball which was definitely catchable. But he did not bring the Cubs down solely. Other factors were at hand, and it's unfortunate. But this event is definitely not a memorable moment. It is, simply, an embarrassing moment which forever doomed a fan in the eyes of loyal Cubs fans whose team deserved a World Series appearance.
Jimbo04 07/25/2004
This is just a bad situation for Bartman. If anyone wants to blame just him look at pictures of it. There are other hands going for the ball other than him or Cubs outfielder Moises Alou.
Blanco~Nino 07/09/2004
even if there was no interference, i believe the ball would have ended up foul anyways. i have replayed the event multiple times, and concluded that the ball was just out of Alou's reach. So in my opinion, if steve bartman had his hands behind his back, then what followed would have happened anyways the only difference is that instead of blaming bartman, cub fans would blame moises alou for not jumping high enough or something like that.

Deep down, I'm a Brewers fan.
melott 02/10/2004
People have pathetic memories that only seem to go back four years. This shouldn't even be ranked anywhere near the top 20..
Bartman Sucks 01/19/2004
Many people are saying that he only did what every fan would do, and that is true if you are out of the range of play. When you are in the front row you risk interfering with the play, so you should stay out of the way.
DeathRattle 12/19/2003
I wouldn't considered this a memorable moment all (nor the way he was treated by others). All those other cub fans that went for that ball should recieve the same treatment if Steve Bartman had to endure that media onslaught. I don't think curses of any kind are considered memorable by most.
Todd Parker 12/18/2003
The Cubs were rolling on their way to the World Series and this douchebag decides to reach his retarded hands out. I hate Steve Bartman!
Tunefreak 11/05/2003
Let the guy alone! If you are a true baseball fan you'd have done the same thing!
