I have used Fresh Step scoopable litter for over 16 years. I have 2 cats. When they added carbon to the litter, it diminished the effectiveness and changed the odor control - and NOW, the litter odor is noticeable in the entire home. I am going to the grocery store to change to another brand - TONIGHT! I can't live with it anymore - or see my cats sick from it. My older cat has runny eyes each time he uses the litter. My orange cat is on allergy and steroids from the rash that caused the fur to fall off the left side of his face - and THAT sinus issue - BEGAN with the carbon - and the vet also believes it is the cause. It is CLEARLY exacerbated from the litter box. (It is the side of the face where the paw he grooms with and rubs over after using the litterbox.) I KNOW that is the source because it bothers me - MY sinuses, even from the bag - I dislike the odor of what used to be dusty - but is now it is dusty, smelly and sticky and it has to GO. It is NOT an improvement. I have had guests - who NEVER ever knew or thought I had a litter box, now I have guests ask WHAT "THAT" odor is. It is leaving a film on the bathroom floor - it is the kitty's room - tile floor etc., - and no one uses that bathroom because it is a laundry/pet room. It is leaving carbon dust everywhere . I am wiping STICKY black dust off the white tiles! The carbon scoopable is all the markets in carry and it is intolerable. I have to change brands - I have used Fresh Step since my first kitty over 17 years ago - and I can't stand this new litter. I have a very ill kitty and another who is tearing up, and I cannot take the "new improvement." I have 4 of the 14lb bags in the closet - and they will be thrown away - I don't think that it belongs in the local shelter either. I have friends who have also changed because of the same problem.

Fresh Step clumps very hard, well. Very Dusty. (Not good for humans or the cats). Very Strong perfume oder. Very Tracking. (tracks alot). Little on the Expensive side. "I have heard clumping litter is not good for cats, So my next box of litter I plan to switch to a clay or etc... but defently NOT Fresh Step. People with allergies would Not be wise at all to use this product. It bothers my throat and nose every time I have to scoop it. Yes, I can taste the perfume also. "GROSS"!!!). All the Reviews on here you read are exactlly the Truth. Not good litter. God Bless. -Sunsetts.

I'm asthmatic, my hubby has sinus problems, and we are both perfume sensitive. When we changed litter or scooped, got puffs of dust. NO GOOD!! Furthermore, although admittedly it did a SUPER job of masking the scent of the excreta the perfume was overpowering and neither of us could bear it. I used it in lieu of dog litter for my dogs, and they couldn't stand the smell either!!!

Fresh Step is really dusty and has this super strong perfume scent to it. It does clump really hard and covers up the odors. But I will not be letting my 3 cats use this anymore because I am concerned about them inhaling all the dust that comes out.

Horrible litter! The first time I poured the litter into the box I could actually TASTE THE LITTER! And not only after I poured it but EVERY SINGLE TIME I scooped! EWWW!!! The other problem I had with Fresh Step was the dust that came out this. These clouds of dust would emerge and I just couldn't breathe properly, I had to cover up my face with my shirt when I scooped. If I couldn't breathe properly then I'm pretty sure my cat couldn't either. I bought this stuff once and only once. Not recommended.

This stuff clumps pretty well but the perfume smell is completely overpowering. It's also extremely dusty. I live in a small apt and the dust covers the counters and tv screen after about a week. (I scoop daily.) Also, I have allergy induced asthma and when I pour a fresh batch there is so much dust that I'm about to have an asthma attack. NOT GOOD for small spaces. At least it's cheap - but I'll never buy it again.

I do not like this litter at all and neither do my cats! It's VERY DUSTY and the perfumy scent is very potent!! I'm pretty sure inhaling all that dust is not good for my cats. My female cat refuses to cover up her poop and pee now because of all the dust that comes out. The only thing I like about Fresh Step is that it clumps well and it's cheap.

It seems to absorb the odors, but it is really dusty and gets tracked all over the house
bunniee777 07/28/2007
its just ok, surley not the best out there , dusty
Biffsup3 06/20/2007
My cat will not use it and the dust is bad.
Gretchenfsu 06/02/2007
There nothing to fresh about it about... I does not absorb odors or even mask them. It also does not "clump". I'll never buy another bag.

we have multiple cats and have tried several different brands of cat litter, and have come to conclude that this is the BEST
herbertdawn 11/23/2006
This litter is the WORST about tracking. When my cat gets out of the box, you can tell where he went next. I have never had this problem with any other litter. I agree with the other reviewer that it turns to sludge quickly. (that may be why it is sticking to my cat!)
MRoche 11/04/2006
The price is right, it is effective and out of the several brands I have tried so far the cats an I like this one the best.

I have used Fresh Step for 12 years and been very happy with it. (I have two cats). HOWEVER! The new formula is terrible!!! It is worse for odor control and the clumping is like glue--very sticky. I find myself changing the whole box more frequently now. Why did they have to change a good thing? So we would have to buy more often? I am seriously considering buying another brand.
Carleen0106 04/21/2006
since fresh step went to the new formula my cat has lost her fur from her back and part of her tail. i have used fresh step for 8 years and now have to buy something i really don't like. but my cat has her fur back.
farmfresh 12/26/2005
smells like potent "i'm trying to cover up my cat's dookie with hey-look-i'm-using-cat-litter". it also turns to SLUDGE very quickly - even with scooping. ...WHICH is horrible to clean out of the box... even with a scooper you'll be hoovering over that box like it's sludgey oatmeal with superglue mixed in. no thanks.
RiodeOuro 12/06/2005
I am concerned that the perfume element may not be healthy for my cat (i.e., she's obviously inhaling the perfumed dust from the litter while digging in it).
Lisa Fitzgerald 10/06/2005
We currently have 9 cats. This is the best litter I've ever used. I have tried differents litters and this beats them all. As long as I scoop the litter box regularly, there is no odor.
Kittenstocats 08/25/2005
This is my favorite cat litter. I gave it a 4 because I know that some of the expensives ones are better. But it smells great when your cat digs unlike some of the others such as multi cat. It seems to hide the odor very well! I will stick to this cat litter because it is not to expensive but it is very good
texasyankee 06/19/2005
I don't like how it smells; it's so obvious you have a litter box in the house. Not sure the cat likes it either.
redcherry 03/16/2005
the only one brand I trust
chriswilis 02/21/2005
Used regular non-clumping for 19 years with my first very healthy cat. Switched to clumping when we adopted 2 -1 male and 1 female. Ok until both cats were hospitalized for urinary problems! I have no proof that it caused the health problems but I will never use it again.

Best there is!

I have used Fresh Step Cat Litter for 14-years. It has been the only cat litter my cat liked & everybody commented that my home never had that litter box smell. Unfortunately, the last several bags I've bought don't seem to have the odor control. I clean the litter box daily. Has Fresh Step has changed their formula? My rating goes from a great to just ok. \\UPDATE: 9/3/04 Fresh Step's Customer Service improves original rating (just ok to almost good), but they still need better odor control formula.
Linzy1981 08/01/2004
I only use fresh step for my 2 cats. My friends and family could not tell I own cats if they never came out to greet them. :)

I love fresh step.. i never seen my cats happier. Just seeing how good the liter abors the liquid is amazing ..fresh step is the best and always will be ........but u gotta love your cats 2get them the best .. <3love me the cat lover...<3
kamylienne 05/24/2004
Fresh Step has been the best choice so far for our cats. Scoopable, and fairly good at odor control. While many scoop-type litters don't hold up with liquids as well, Fresh Step has been consistantly good with staying in a clump. Makes the hated chore of cleaning the litter box just a little bit easier.
Angela Alvarado 03/31/2004
I have tried all brands of cat litter (generic and name brand). Fresh step scoopable is the only cat litter that keeps myself and my cats happy!
jporterTN 01/14/2004
This is the only litter (and we've tried them all) that works well with our Littermaid.
