Terms such as 'maestro', 'legend' and 'genius' are terms which have been devalued of late, given to any moderately successful sportsman. Lester Piggott is one of the few sportsmen for whom those titles are inadequate. He had a unique and unsurpassed ability to get the very best from horses, seemingly able to transfer his iron will and determination to win to his mounts. He turned average horses into good horses, good horses into great horses and great horses into superstars. Truly the greatest jockey of all time.

Greatest Jockey ever whose judgement of pace and finish was sheer genius unequaled in the sport.Gordon Richards was greater statistically but could never equal Lester who understood his mounts like a mother understood her child. His riding on Ribero in the 1968 St.Leger,Roberto in the 1972 Epsom Derby and Alleged in the 1978 Prix De L'Arc De Triomphe have been unsurpassed in race-riding history. The maestro will be 70 tomorrow on November 8th and let us all wish him a grand 70th birthday.
