one of those big men who had potential and lived up to it...great defensive player...sat out freshman year to learn english....played well coming off bench as sophomore (88-89 season)...moved into starting lineup as junior and senior..had great years...but surrounding talent was only average his final two seasons

Its amazing how long Georgetown's 3 classic centers played and excelled in the NBA. Dikembe was a great defensive center on both levels, and truly represents Georgetown well both on and off the court.

I had the chance to play against Dikembe a couple of times when he was just learning the game, and what you don't realize how about this guy is how strong he is. He's lanky, but he's wiry strong, and painful to play against as he has lots of sharp corners (elbows, knees, etc.) I ran into Dik this past weekend at a college reunion, and he still looks great. The fact that he showed up to a college reunion should tell you something. A lot of people know about all the charity work Mutombo has done - building hospitals, leading aid delegations, etc. But did you know he has seven kids? Three of his own, and four adopted - kids of his brother who was killed in fighting in Zaire. Mutombo is a pretty exceptional guy, and represents the Hoyas in a way that few can.
