you can read this book like any other history book of recent years Stalingrad, war in Russia etc, then every once in a while you realise that all this happened to one boy, and it takes your breath away. If you think i could do that remember that Guy Sajer was not 20 until 1946! Outstanding

Both my wife and I were terribly moved by this book. The descriptive language gives new meanining to the commentary to the effect that war is a period of boredom punctuated by periods of abject horror. As a VN Vet who was shot down, and scortched, after 3 months of service, I could not imagine being sent back to the front time after time. My appreciation of our troops who fought for the duration in WWII in all Theaters, under similar circumstances knows no bounds. Charles N. Yongue

For me Guy Sajer's Forgotten Soldier was the head turner. Everybody thinks they know what war is. Everybody assumes they have the imagination and the understanding of war. They don't need books to prove it. Well at least I did, and reading this book (twice) proved me wrong. It's alot worse than I thought. I wouldn't have survived for sure!

I have read this book twice. It rates alongside All Quiet in its story of soldiers enduring horrific events which become less and less understandable and more and more out of their control. Its perspective is that of a German soldier and despite what we now know about German brutality in eastern europe one comes away with a great respect for the ordinary 'landser' and for the Wehrmacht as a fighting force.

A classic, first hand account of life in the Gross Deustchland division, on the Eastern Front during WWII. This novel rates among the top military and historical novels in the literary world. Essential reading for every study of 20th century, or military, history.

Possibly the most gut-wrenching book I've ever read about WW2. This is essentially the journal of a German infantryman who fought the Russians on the eastern front, and his experience comes as close to qualifying as 'hell' as anything else I've read or heard. If you're ever feeling sorry for yourself and need a little perspective, reading this book would be a good way to remind yourself that things could be a lot worse.
