03/10/2008 | I read this in the 1960's and it was great then. Shirer was a reporter on the spot at that time. Since then, almost fifty years passed with lots of new records coming available coupled with new scholarship. This is a thick book and you should tackle at least part of it.

I suppose a big plus of the book is that Shirer actually provides a first hand account of many key moments leading up to the war and the fact that he could get so many eye wintness accounts as the book was published in the late 50's. The disadvantage with the book is that so many new papers etc have been released in the mean time. But this really is one of the key books if you want a definitive account of WWII and as important, the factors that led up to it, going back really to the previous century, Franco Prussian war, German/Prussian Psyche etc
