This is a good biography of a complex person. I knew lots of GI's who absolutely hated Dugout Doug. I knew one old guy who was especially contemptous. He saw a newsreel of MacArthur landing someplace in New Guinea on a certain date. My old veteran friend swore that on that time and place he was in an officer's club in a rear area and MacArthur was having a drink.
It turns out that my old fried was right. Almost all those wading ashore scenes were done days or weeks after the fact for propaganda purposes.
