I suspect she suffered from some form of mental illness or instability, rather than just being an ill-tempered shrew.

I guess helping Lincoln maintain a level of sanity was an accomplishment.

She obviously was a very mentally ill person. Mental illness is a very serious sickness, and left untreated you see what happens in the world. So sad, and with the right help could be avoided. Look at the people who committed these atrocities at Colombine and Virginia Tech. Obviously mentally ill; what person in their right mind could do this?

It's nice that other comments already explain why she might have been the most inept First Ladies of the U.S. So I can give her one star for disliking her intensely without being too unjust.

If her husband is widely considered the greatest President of the United States ever, Mary Todd Lincoln maybe the worst First Lady in our nation's history. This 'lady' repeatedly embarrassed Abraham Lincoln in public, often throwing outrageous fits in clear view of crowds. And any woman who even flirted innocently with the President forever earned the scorn of Mary Todd Lincoln. But perhaps the most outlandish thing the First Lady ever did was demand for a large increase in furniture expenditures for the White House during the height of the Civil War. In short, Mary Todd Lincoln was a BITCH. But if there are any redeeming qualities in the First Lady, it was her genuine affection and love for her husband, and when he was assassinated, the nation grieved with her.

Evidently, this woman had some problems and today she might be diagnosed as bipolar. I think she meant well and tried to help her husband, but overall she probably caused him enormous stress with her mad shopping sprees and other antics.

This poor woman was a sad case. She lost 3 of 4 sons and a husband. Her husband served as president during the most tumultuous time in US history. She supported her husband which meant she had to separate from her family members who were southern supporters. Despite her allegiance to her husband and the the Union, newspapers called her a spy and a southern sympathizer. No wonder she went crazy. She had no support. In the 1860's, First Ladies couldn't go on the Today show and complain about vast, right wing conspiracies. Come to think of it, as fragile as Mary Lincoln was, she probably had more class than to behave like that, anyway.

What was redeeming about this woman? She was nothing short of a neurotic witch. While I understand how horrible all the tragedies in her life must have been, she was insane long before any of them happened. I have the utmost sympathy for good ole Abe since the poor guy had to suffer with this shrew. As if his personal and career tragedies weren't bad enough, he had to live with this abusive, mentally damaged wench.

I've felt kind of bad for her in the same way I did Jackie Kennedy. It can't be easy to witness your husband's violent death - especially when you're sitting right next to him. On ther other hand, based on everything else I've read or seen about her, she was pretty much a little money blowing shrew.

The best you can say about her is that she steeled Abe for the suffering he'd have to endure waging a brutal and tragic (but on balance, worthwhile) war.

Poor woman! Had to see her husband literally die right in front of her. That must have been heart-breaking!
