Personally I can't stand people like her. It's not dislike, I just abhor the feeling of being a nonentity that I get in the presence of such undefatigable energetic specimens. Of course her vigourous engagement for loads of sensible purposes made her an outstanding First Lady.

Like it or not, she changed the whole idea of what a First Lady was supposed to be like. I don't think anybody ever so comforted the distressed or distressed the comfortable.

Transformed the First Lady from a purely symbolic role to a role with some significance, namely in social advocacy. For that, she is to be commended. However, as others have noted, she was silent on the clear human rights issues raised by the interment of Japanese Americans during the war, which is odd considering her self-proclaimed role as a human rights activist. Nonetheless, she was a memorable first lady and clearly more influential than most.

She was a hypocrite on the internment issue. She was a cranky busybody who after being rejected by her husband, went sticking her nose into other people's business. I never got the charm of Eleanor although I remember her well from the days of my youth.

I commend her for getting involved in political issues and speaking up, but she was issued to go down to an internment camp, and when she came back, gave false reports to save her husband's rear end. Now even though I understand that it was her husband, She refused to acknowledge the suffering of the Japanese-Americans.

Stupid redneck bitch. She married her own cousin. But, hey, Some people admire her for that! I certainly don't!

I will be the first to admit that I am not a big authority on the first ladies. I do admire Elenore Roosevelt. She was one of the first ladies who took her job serious. She did not sit back and do nothing she got involved. She was a great humanitarian and continued to do good for the the USA and other countries even when she was not the first lady anymore. I think she helped pave the way for the first ladies who came after her.
