The ultimate example of when a TV show jumps the shark (a desperate move to revive interest in a long running series) was adding Cousin Oliver to The Brady Bunch. The producers erred when thinking the cast needed a new young kiddie aboard to up the show's cuteness factor. Far from adding a nice complement to the cast, this gave an awkward imbalance to later episodes. If the tyke wanted his own blue square, he should have auditioned for the Hollywood Squares instead.

Cousin Oliver is just another example of adding a new characer to a show when the producers run out of plots. His character did nothing for the Brady Bunch except to bring it down. He was supposed to be the cute little kid but was not.
