Our daughter LOVED her Kick N Play!! She started in it at 2.5 months and stopped about 5.5 months once she realized how to get out of it! It still makes a great little lounger for watching Baby Einstein and sipping a bottle!

It depends on the baby. Our daughter hated it but our nephew loved it. I wouldn't label it as essential though.

The ones with the vibrating seats are also good for colicky babies. Unfortunately, another product you won't use much past six months but I used mine a lot when my babies were small. I had a Fisher Price Kick n Play which made a good nap spot most of the time.
