Dick could have acted faster in getting us out of Vietnam, but I give him high marks for what he did. His imposition of wage-price controls after the leftos had been yammering for that very thing rapidly cured them of sucking eggs in that respect.
His China opening was the masterstroke.

Finally bombed the Communists across the DMZ after LBJ had let the Democrats in Congress run the Vietnam Conflict, helping bring the Vietcong back to the negotiating table and ending the whole mess that Kennedy had started. Stupid Democrats. You can't fight a war without killing the enemy.

One of the curious things about this very complex president is that he was at his best when things were going bad, but he performed at his worst when things were going well. I am convinced of one thing: he was a much better man than the Press will ever give him credit for.

Nixon inherited a nation in turmoil and a war with no clear end in sight. North Vietnam continued to threaten South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Nixon gradually reduced the number of troops in Vietnam significantly from 550,000 in 1969 to 30,000 in 1972. Nixon accelerated the training of Vietnam's armed forces. Nixon, in 1970, aruging the need for the protection of American troops, ordered an attack on Communist sanctuaries in Cambodia. Huge quanities of supplies were seized. In 1970 and into 1971 and 72 increased the bombing of North Vietnam. Increased military pressure eventually led to North Vietnam expressing an interest in negotiating peace. A series of unannounced peace talks uncovered a mutual willingness to make concessions. On January 28, 1973, a cease-fire was agreed to. The agreement provided for the withdrawal of all American troops from South Vietnam and a framework within which various Vietnamese factions were to work toward reconciliation. Although Saigon eventually fell, Nixon did end the war and brought the American troops home. The unwinnable war had been ended and the madness was over. I truly believe that had Nixon remained President and not been under so much pressure with regards to the war, the North Vietnamese would not have overrun the South. He did what was right at the time, and ended the war that had caused the country so much pain and sorrow.
