 | SuKingsANDKnights300 (20) 11/18/2008 | God bless America!
Good vs Evil. " Before september 11th attack, I receive an intel from the security agency about the erratic activities of Mohammed Atta, including his stay in Germany, and more travelling timelines recorded, simulation of aircraft attack, and about potential strike, but I just slept on it" What Am I now?" What does this tell my American people, and how do they see this?
But anyway thus far, is not my concern though, but I think this was a very horrific event, far more complicatable in someways though.

 | irishgit (155) 05/15/2008 | Obviously very tragic, not just for the friends and families of victims, but for the way it has changed how we look at the world. Internally and externally it seems a more hateful place now. Personally, I lost a friend and colleague that day, and I cannot view the videos of the event to this day. It is watching him die, and I will not do it.
All that being said, and despite the relative currency of this event, it pales in tragic significance behind the Civil War and Slavery, for example.

 | twansalem (44) 05/14/2008 | The events that took place on September 11, 2001 were horribly tragic, and I am not trying to make light of this event in any way. But take a look at some of the other items on this list, and you will realize that it is lucky to make the top 10 worst events in the history of our country. In no particular order, here are just a few examples:
The Civil War : Americans fighting Americans, families were torn apart, huge amounts of the South were destroyed, all at a huge loss of life.
Slavery: At one point in the not so distant past, Americans thought it was perfectly normal to treat another person as personal property. Do I really have to say anything else?
WWII: Pearl Harbor was the only direct attack on the U.S., but the number of American casualties in both Europe and the Pacific were immense.
I gave three examples of things that were clearly more tragic, I could give others, but I think I made my point.

Islam is Trying to Destroy Anyone not being Muslim, especially Christians and Jews! And still,to this day, some People are Asleep to it or are calling those trying to warn about or Prevent or Stop further attacks "the real terrorists" or just plain "prejudiced fools".Wake up,People! Terrorism IS Real and it's primarily the Extremist Muslims causing it.

 | Drummond (60) 12/28/2005 | Horrible - but not on par with slavery, genocide, or massive war. On par with the Titanic or similar tragedy certainly.
Updating to respond to Ridgewalker: It didn't lead to war per se. We should have pursued it as a criminal action, and the perps may have been brought to justice by now. It was an excuse for war, not the cause.
Updating a second time to upgrade my rating, which was mostly responsive to other comments here. It was a tragedy, and the war in Aphganistan was probably justified even if it didn't produce all the intended results. However, we've been hit with terrorist attacks for decades now. What was new about this was the films and images, and the number of deaths. But we should not have let it become more than that. In many respects, we've played right into terrorist hands.
We should have taken lessons from Israel. They slowly tracked down Nazi after Nazi, year after year, without invasions or bombings. Most of them were caught and justice was had. We may never get Bin Laden now.

 | pabob (2) 06/22/2005 | Horrifically shocking and tragic event that we must all admit was about unpreventable. It saddens me to see all the theories regarding blame and conspiracy. I don't care who would have been president, Bush or Gore, 9/11 would have happened. Let's be honest. Many Dems were spinning during 2004 and pointing fingers at Bush. It was wrong, and it didn't help Sen. Kerry. If Gore were president, the Republicans would have done the same thing to him. This was, and still is, a hard pill for us to swallow as Americans. Bush has handled this as well as any person in the Oval Office could do. The fact that he is so decisive, despite the disagreements of some, has been helpful for this nation. No attacks have happened since on our soil, and for that we should all be grateful.

 | Wid71 (9) 05/21/2005 | Shocking event that caused so much sadness. My heart went out to all the families of the innocents that were killed. It was nice to see the country band together and to see other countries pitching in to help. Unfortunately Bush ruined all that goodwill. Now we have a divided country, many countries despise us, Bin Laden still hasn't been captured and the Saudi's were never held accountable. Such a shame that certain members of government used this tragedy to push their own selfish agendas.

 | Randyman (113) 05/21/2005 | This is a given. I don'I understand how someone can disagree with this. It is the biggest national tragedy in my lifetime, not just because of the initial destruction but because of the ensueing consequences and the war that is now going on in Iraq and Afganistan. Too may lives were lost in the name of hatred.

 | caphillsea77 (32) 05/18/2005 | For my generation it was the most dreadful day in memory. Nothing has been the same since. The immediate reaction of seeing America come together and bold patriotism really touched my heart and it would be nice if we could sustain that. Unfortunately it seems the repercussions of this day have really devided a lot of us and made this country a cynical place. Regardless of whether you like Bush or not, live in a blue or red state, conservative or liberal, ask yourself....... Where are the leaders ??? Who can unite us? Is there someone out there with a voice? A revolutionary figure who can wake us up? I can only hope and pray that they are out there because America deserves better than what we are getting.

 | Jar-Jar Binks (17) 05/12/2005 | It was a tragedy to begin with. But like Bill Clinton said, we had a price to pay and we got it. Our government wasn't blameless. If America stopped its flamboyant military superiority over other countries, none of this carnage would have happened.

 | Djahuti (57) 05/10/2005 | This was horrible and tragic, and all the more so because it possibly could have been prevented.Condi Rice was asleep at the wheel. The first thing she did as secretary of state was to decree that data on worldwide terrorist attacks be excluded from the state departments annual report, since she thought it was not relevant. Many other countries intelligence agencies tried to warn the Bush Administration of a possible attack, involving hijacked planes-but they ignored them all.Sickening!

 | TJGypsy2 (7) 05/10/2005 | While it was certainly tragic and definetly horrible, there are so many other things on this list that were so much worse, both in terms of lives lost and impact on our nation that this one doesn't rate more than a three. While it was certainly the most painful memory for my generation, the Vietnam War, Both World Wars, and the Civil War would all top this in terms of tragedy.

 | James76255 (26) 05/10/2005 | Over 3,000 people dead, mostly civilians and mostly Americans, in New York, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania. Two of the most recognizable buildings in the country reduced to rubble, and the very heart of our national defense heavily damaged. All because a bunch of radicals believed they would be rewarded with 72 virgins in Heaven. It was a brutal wake up call. For the first time we had to face the reality that we were not invincible. After ignoring the terrorists for years, even after several attacks, the fact that they could get to us was thrown into our face in the form of burning buildings. ANYBODY that believes this will be forgotten in 20 years is not dealign with reality. The Vietnam War was on the other side of the planet and has not been forgotten more than 30 years later. The assinations of Kennedy and Lincoln: not forgotten. Pearl Harbor: Not forgotten. September 11, 2001: Will not be forgotten!! We remember.

 | Seraph (10) 09/30/2004 | I place this as more tragic than Pearl Harbor, because it was an attack on civilians rather than soldiers. Pearl Harbor also accomplished a good thing by getting a powerful Allied country fired-up for the war...unfortunately, when you have only the slightest idea who or where your enemy is, retaliation is terribly difficult.

 | EschewObfuscation (71) 07/20/2004 | The idea that there is another single event in US history more tragic than this is baffling. I don't consider a war to be an event, but a tragic, unfortunate string of events leading to a time period of mutual destruction. We're just getting more efficient at the destruction part. But, for changing a country, and therefore, the world, so completely and so permanently, it's hard to beat this one. The symbolism of using our own technology with innocent lives aboard as a bomb against some of our most recognizable icons of prosperity and security, brashly breezing through our own ridiculously incompetent efforts at security in the process, our enemies laughing on CNN and other networks around the world at our unthinkable sorrow, causing our own people to jump 100 stories to their deaths, with the majority of our population hardly able to turn away or turn the TV off, it was about as tragic as it gets. I don't need 5 or 10 years to figure it out, I didn't need 5 minutes. The war is on. We can fight it or be caught sleeping and lying to ourselves again.

 | PzKpfw VI E (28) 03/29/2004 | The most tragic part about this entire situation is that it all could have been prevented. And then, Bush uses the death of 3000 American citizens to justified a war that shouldn't have really been fought.

 | CanadaSucks (50) 02/16/2004 | Tragic, indeed. But for the sake of this list, the Civil War and Pearl Harbor are higher on my list without even giving it much thought. . .Certainly slavery should be higher than 9-11. We are too close to 9-11 to really look at it with any pretense of objectivity. . .

 | CherrySoda99 (31) 11/02/2003 | I haven't been alive long enough to really know all of the tragic events that have happened in the US over the years. But this one really affected me. I'm not even American. But up here in Canada, all the news stations were flooded with images and reports that day. I remember going home at lunch time and going in my parents bedroom and just staring at the TV screen watching those awful images and just seeing the panic and fear in the peoples eyes as they ran from the buildings that were about to collapse. This event totally changed the awy that people looked at America I think, because it was a major tragidy that effected everybody in New York and not to mention other parts of the US. I find it disturbing to know that so many of us have forgotten already. And if u think about it, if we forget about it in like 2 years. How are we going to remember it in like 20 years or longer. The lack of respect is just appaling, and I'm not saying everybody, I know that a lot of people are reminded of it every 9/11 whether it be because if the fear that it may happen again or the pained memories of the loss of a loved one. But I think that we all shoutld remember because whether or not we were affected by it, we need to understand that over 3000 people parished that day for no apparent reason, they didn't do anything to deserve to die, they were innocent. Also there was like 30 000 people probably that lossed someone very close to them like a reletive or just a friend or neighbor. It hurts a lot either way, and the pain lasts a long time, but the way that people just shake it off like it's no big deal. They are the ones US if u are Canadian, and if u live in Alaska or California ir England or even Australia u need to remember that so many people were affected by this amazing, awful horrific tragidy . It's not something that u can just let go as if it never even happened. I mean, we remember Rememberence Day, and that's like ,what 60 or 70 years ago? But we can't remember something that happened in your own country? Like 2 years ago? I mean it's just shocks me to see the lack of respect that some people have! But still, I plan to remember because I know it's very hard . So ya. thats my ranting and raving I can do now. Sorry if I bored you. But anyway L8er dayz.

 | twinmom101 (33) 09/13/2003 | This was awful and anyone who uses terrorism to make a point deserves all the hell that awaits them, yet an even sadder aspect of this attack was that it brought the US into a terrible club that many other nations have been a part of for years. My husband's country, Turkey has lost over 30,000 people to acts of terrorism in the last 10 years. That's the equivalent to one 9/11 a year for a decade. On September 11 1973, a US led coup against the current Peruvian governmemnt led to the death of 30,000 people as well. What 9/11 did to the US was shatter our sense of security and make us realize that terrorism could happen here. Maybe that is why many countries do not understand why America has gone to such extreme lengths following the attacks- they have dealt with it for years without resorting to the invasion of two countries. I'm not saying the apathy and resentment the rest of the world feels is right, but it explains the exasperation. Still, politics aside, we must never forget this and remember every innocent life lost to terrorism is a tragedy, no matter where in the world it happens.

 | Redoedo (41) 08/12/2003 | A horrible tragedy which brought back memories of the attack on Pearl Harbor just under sixty years earlier. Our enemy had attacked us from behind and the result was over 3,000 lives lost and many more destroyed. We did not read about this heinous attack in the newspaper- but we watched live footage of the attacks on the news- the second plane ramming into the tower, people jumping to their death to escape the burning buildings, and the collapse of both World Trade Centers. Most of us will remember exactly where we were when we first heard of the attacks. Most of us will remember what we did at that moment- stare in disbelief, shake our head in anger, cry in grief. This event affected the lives of so many. So many loved ones lost- fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, uncles, aunts, and friends. We atleast owe it to those whose lives were destroyed by these heinous attacks to capture those who were behind them.
