A particularly vicious piece of social engineering, victimizing people that by any reasonable interpretatio of the standards of international law would be considered allies.

Treacherous, unjust and despicable.

Usually gets glossed over in many history books and classes. . .a shameful event, to be sure. . .

The disgusting result of greed. The Cherokee were't even "uncivilized" by the standards of the time. Thanks to their peaceful nature, and the work of Christian missionaries, they had their own aphabet and thriving community. Then the government stepped in and ruined it all, destroying lives and families. Smaller government sound good anyone?

Tragedy for the people involved, and the soul of our country. There's nothing to distinguish this from forced communalization under Stalin with the exception of the numbers.

I guess it was twice as tragic for the slaves of the Cherokee.

It is absolutely disgusting what was done to the Native Americans. We not only took over their land, but we subjected them to horrible treatment over and over again. They were robbed of their identity, language and culture. And we had the nerve to refer to THEM as savages!!!!

Truly despicable and clearly a black mark on American history. It is just treacherous that this policy continued for over a decade, with thousands of Native Americans slaughtered and thousands more driven from their homes. Ironically, the man who initiated this ruthless and unjust policy claimed to have the interests of the people at heart. I suppose that excludes any person whose skin is not white.

It's sincerely hard for me not to hate Andrew Jackson for this tragedy. He managed to dehumanize and murder a proud, wonderful people in one swift stroke. A huge, ugly, horrific blemish on American history.

Americas very own Genocide. It is a shame what has happened to Native Americans. It is terrible that you they are a minority among minorities, when this land used to be their own.

As reprehensible as slavery and just as shameful. Those who did this are no doubt spinning in Hell along with the people who brought you slavery.

This was one of the saddest chapters in American history. A manifestation of the exploitation of the indigenous population of America. Jackson was an intolerant racist.

This was absolutely terrible, and definitely a down point in US history. The way that these Cherokees were treated was just abominable. The worst part about it is, it could easily repeat itself, considering the general mindset of the country at this moment. Should be a required discussion in middle school social studies.
