The 5th Gen Golf has many improvements and is worth looking at. It is over-priced but has more safety feature and standard equipment than anything else in its class. The GTI, is still the class leader for hot hatches but the Mazda 3 is only one tick away from overtaking that position.

As with the Jetta, the Golf is hard to turn away from, especially the TDI with its incredible mileage. However, it also appears to suffer from serious quality problems.
