There are only a handful of primetime television programs that truly work on both the child and adult level, and "The Muppet Show" was one. Slapstick comedy isn't normally my thing, but certain allowances must be made with animated puppets and certainly this is what appealed to younger viewers. However, the dialogue was clever and the skits (recurring and otherwise) often played off of current events and pop culture, and this is what made the series work for adults.

They're quite peculiar but I like them!

The high ranking of this kids program shows the erosin of the intellect in this county or just how bad the rest of the shows in this era was.

I would really give this a 4.5. This was a fun original show to watch. Jim Henson was the creator along with his talented crew of puppeteers. A variety show hosted by the muppets. Each week they would have a special guest star.Kermit was the emcee of the Muppet Show.It gave Jim Henson and company a chance to introduce a whole new cast of characters. Miss Piggy the vain, impatient, pig who loved Kermit, Statler and Waldorf the old men who came to each show to heckle the muppets. I liked Animal who would tear up the stage and played the drums { he reminds me of the tasmanian devil a bit} Sam the Eagle who always had a protest speech to make. The show had bits they did every week. Such as Pigs in Space, and the Swedish Chef. The Muppet Show became very popular with celebrities who loved being on the show. they had a whole variety of famous people, including, Julie Andrews, Bob Hope. Steve Martin, John Denver, elton john, to name a few. I always got the feeling these celebrities had a blast doing the show.

as a kid i really liked the show but now i suppose i would watch reruns of the 70's version not that 90's crap
Nightbird 06/17/2005
I know that this may sound bestial but I thought that Miss Piggy was cute and the show was so funny.
marpike 04/23/2005
Always good clean fun. Was a big fan of the Swedish Chef. This would have been a show I would let my kids watch.
irishgit 03/25/2005
I was always fond of this, especially the two grumpy guys in the balcony.
tracyannp 03/11/2005
who can compare the Muppet Show original to the stinky muppet babies cartoon? Are you insane!? I loved the old shows featuring celebs like John Denver and they intergrated with the Muppets as though they were living and breathing creatures. Fraggle Rock kicked butt as well..
Alexg681 01/27/2005
I haven't seen much of this, it's OK, but Muppet Babies cartoon was much better!
numbah16tdhaha 01/01/2005
My fave is the two old guys that sit up top and talk trash the whole time.
tocwelsh 01/01/2005
Terrible, just like Sesame street!!!!!
sfalconer 12/08/2004
This show was funny every week. Kermit, Fozzy, Miss Piggy and the rest were just hilarious. The strength of the show was the writing and the way the guests seemed to always fit right into the madness and appear to be comfortable at the same time. There were many great guests on the show and it still holds up today.

Alot of fun to watch then as it is to watch now.

I loved the Muppetts but they are not the Top of My all time greats
KellyO 04/20/2004
I was a child when this show was popular and I looked forward to it every week. It was a great show for children and adult children. It was a fun, good-natured, humorous family show. What can I say? With all the reality TV shows and violence on TV these days: They don't make 'em like they used to.
kinkykinks 03/29/2004
it's just puppets!

A fun show in a wierd way...I haven't seen it for a long time...but I can still remember how fun it was for me as a young one...it is certainly a good kids show...
Moosekarloff 12/23/2003
An inventive and creative show that was entertaining and amusing for several seasons until they let it drag on for too long. I thought the way guest hosts were included in the program was well done and out of the ordinary.
mllelarisa 11/02/2003
This show is SO FUN!!! I just love it.
alty6905 08/17/2003
Did any show have as many GOOD guests?
toonmaster 07/19/2003
I loved watching this show when I was a kid (Particularly the one with John Cleese, to this day I'm a bona-fide Monty Python buff). It was real off-the-wall hilarity! What gets me though is why they would want to exploit a classic T.V. show by making the dreaded follow-up "Muppets Tonight". That show was so lame! Poor Jim Henson must have been spinning in his grave.
kahfess 07/09/2003
When I was a kid, I loved to watch this fun and cute show. Now my daughter gets to enjoy it on tape. She loves to watch Kermit and Ms. Piggy as well as the rest of the gang. It’s a great show for kids of all ages.

Fun and charming to bad more TV can't be like this
RebelYell1861 05/11/2003
Shouldn't be at the top of this list. What's with you people?
cuttiemel 05/07/2003
i think this show is stupid i dont even know why they came up with it
Franklin 05/03/2003
Jim Henson was the most original talent in the field of popular entertainment during the '70s and '80s. He elevated the Muppets from a puppet show to a new art form.
j777 03/11/2003
they suck. i lost interest in them when i saw a black stick holding their arms.
Sharon3802 03/07/2003
Jiim Henson was truly a genious. People of all ages love the muppets, and I can easily see why.

im not three or four so i dont like it
ReticentRabbit 01/28/2003
This is the most underrated TV show in history...Jim Henson created a show that was innovative and creative, and it appealed to adults and children alike. On top of that, it attracted the most diverse and talented group of guest stars in a long time, from Rudolph Nureyev to Elton John to Edgar Bergen. What a great show!
CastleBee 12/10/2002
I loved to watch this show now and then. It was always fun to see various celebs acting silly, singing and doing skits with the muppets. You'd have to be a real killjoy not to enjoy seeing that kind of tounge in cheek sappiness once in awhile. And that kazoo theme song has been forever burned into my brain!
red630 12/09/2002
I wish I could catch more of this show in reruns. This show had some very classic television moments ever.
callmetootie 12/03/2002
Not bad, but the celebrity guests coming on and off began to get obnoxious and untolerable mid-way through it's run. Interesting characters made up for mediocre writing.
wendi1bird 11/27/2002
I still have a crush on the Swedish Chef!! Skadiffi - dee
v the final battle 11/20/2002
really liked this show as a pre teen in the late 70's and early 80's. my favorite part of the show were the special guest stars who were on each week. the most memorable shows for me were the ones guest starring mark hammil, rodger moore and chris reeves. great show overall. a classic. also did some pretty memorable covers of popular songs.
SoSingular 11/06/2002
Not for anybody out of a crib.
Jason1972 10/30/2002
Jim Henson struck gold with this project! I loved this show! All of the guest stars were really cool. And I love those two guys in the balcony. I never knew their names.
lukskywlkr. 10/17/2002
I guess if you are three or four this might entertain you.
hall442 10/01/2002
My father watched it every week without fail. Never EVER failed to make him laugh.
SarahBear 09/13/2002
I love the Muppets! They're so funny. I love Kermit and Fozzie Bear the best.
pikachan 09/12/2002
This show is pretty good. they always had a celebrities every week [John Denver, Brooke Shields, Paul Simon, Etc.]and Kermit always introduced it. My favorite muppets are Rowlf the dog who played his pianio, The Swedish Chef who always made weird recepies, and Gonzo the weird muppet. The mini-bits were good like Pigs In Space and Sam the eagle. I think that Jim Henson was good at creating the muppets.
