If you mean the nicknamed "goat" from my younger days, let's say the 1960's, the GTO was a going machine!

A guy I work with has one. Sounds great, looks cool, and it can really perform.

I'll admit. At first, I didn't think this looked very good on the outside. The inside is cool with the color change gauges and everything, but it looks like a Grand Am from the front and a Sunfire from the back. Nothing special. HOWEVER, the 2005s are getting 6.0 liter LS2s droped in them, which will generate, with the help of functional hood scoops, 400hp, 50 more than the predecessor. The 0 to 60 goes from a 5.2 to a 4.6. And the back end has been changed as well. The fully dual exhausts are separated for symmetry. This along with new larger break disks and red calipers with GTO on the front makes the car looks on the whole a heck of a lot better than the 04. and will be available at the same price.

right idea in its basic form, however they half-assed the production model - should have kept building the TA

All the new GTO is is a rebagded Holden Monaro (a car from Pontiac's Australian distributer) with an off the shelf V-8 shoved in. Don't you think the rebirth of an icon should be something new? What happened to good ol' american engenuity? I guess politics and moneysaving are more important. I would rather buy a rare icon than some renamed econo-sedan with a V-8, which is all the GTO is right now. I gave it 3 stars though because Pontiac is doing the right thing by bringing it back, which many other manufacterers are not doing with their heritage vehicles.
